One of Hollywood’s latest it-couples that has everyone talking is as adorable as they come—Melanie Lynskey and Jason Ritter. Lynskey has been on the acting scene for quite some time now, and you might recognize her for some of her early roles in movies like Heavenly Creatures (1994) and Coyote Ugly (2000). However, it’s her more recent parts that have everyone talking, with her portrayal of Shauna in the hit series Yellowjackets or her part as Kathleen in The Last of Us. Ritter on the other hand (yes, as in John Ritter’s son), has also been a face we’ve grown to know over the last few years. He could be seen in series like Raising Dion, Parenthood, and most recently, Matlock. This lovely duo has been married since 2020, but their love story spans far beyond that. Here, all about Melanie Lynskey and Jason Ritter’s relationship.

How did Jason Ritter and Melanie Lynskey meet?

Though it’s only been recently that this couple has been making headlines, Lynskey and Ritter actually first clicked back in 2013 while filming The Big Ask—and this would end up being the first of many times they shared the screen after getting together. Some of the other films they’ve starred in together include We’ll Never Have Paris (2014), The Intervention (2016), and Ritter even made a cameo in The Last of Us as a terrifying clicker!

Rings, babies and wedding bells

After going strong for quite a while, Ritter got down on one knee in 2017—well, kind of. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actress recalled the semi-off-putting way in which her now-husband proposed. As she remembered it, the day prior, she was trying on rings and put one in particular back on the shelf as she thought it looked a bit like an engagement ring. The next day, Ritter presented her with the ring, paired with a “strange speech” in the midst of their viewing of The Bachelor and that was that. Fast forward a few days and the couple was going to visit his family for Christmas, where he proceeded to announce that they were engaged—much to Lynskey’s surprise!

“It was so confusing, and then I said, ‘That’s not usually what a proposal is like. People usually understand that it’s happening,’” she said on the show. Since then, however, Ritter has been trying to make it up to her, proposing again and again since that day. Adorable!

Nothing but love between this adorable couple

John and Melanie share one daughter together, and their happy little family puts a smile on our faces. “Thank you for making me cry with laughter daily,” Lynskey wrote in a sweet birthday tribute to her hubby back in 2022. “Thank you for giving our little daughter the safest, most joyful, most loving childhood. You are so fun. You are so kind to everyone, even mean people. You are just the best person. And you are very very very very handsome and I love you with all my heart.”

And Ritter has spoken out lately to say that he will most certainly fight for his wife. When Lynskey stunned at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars party, many took to social media asking Ritter, “Can you fight?,” referring to fighting him for his wife. Not only did he take to X to confirm that yes, he could indeed fight, but he even took things a step further with a hilarious video he posted to his Instagram showcasing his tough-as-nails moves. We can only imagine the ways in which he keeps his wife laughing!
