Sam Heughan has brought to life Outlander’s Jamie Fraser—the world’s original book boyfriend—since 2014 on the television adaptation of the hit historical fantasy book series by Diana Gabaldon. While his blonde locks, blue eyes and swoon-worthy Scottish accent have made him the perfect face to lead this action-packed, romantic emotional rollercoaster of a series, there’s far more to the 44-year-old actor. Here, read all about Sam Hueghan alongside the second part of the seventh season of Outlander, now available to watch on Starz.

Raised amongst the lush Scottish landscape, Hueghan credited his upbringing in this environment as the thing that fostered his imagination, which led to his acting career. “I think being brought up in rural Scotland, you know, there were four people in my class at school—and I would say I was perhaps a bit of a loner in some ways—maybe just because you spend a lot of time on your own,” the actor told BBC Radio’s Saturday Live. “I was very fortunate to play in the forests or the grounds of an old castle where we were brought up and raised and I think that being alone and using your imagination really sparked something inside me. I think it perhaps also gives you the drive as well,” he shared.

Before making his on-screen debut, the actor was heavily involved in the theater scene in Edinburgh and London. The dashing star made his television debut in 2004 when he appeared in Island at War. In the years that followed, Heughan made appearances across series like River City, The Wild West, Midsomer Murders and Party Animals. In 2009, he began a recurring role in the series Doctors. All the while, he continued his work on the stage as well. In 2011, Heughan even made an appearance in a beloved Hallmark film, A Princess for Christmas! It was in 2014, however, when things changed for the handsome actor, and it wouldn’t be long before he became a household name.

Sam Heughan and his role as Jamie Fraser in ‘Outlander’

Having brought this series to life for over a decade, Jamie Fraser has become a part of the fabric of Heughan’s being. “The show has been my life for a long time,” he told Radio Times in 2023. “I’ve made friends, we’re basically a family, and it’s going to be very odd not to see everyone again.” As for his relationship with co-star Catriona Balfe, parting ways with her will be an unusual feeling once the show eventually comes to an end.

“We’ve sort of grown up together, I think, experienced our first fan events, our first red carpets and press junkets and coming to New York for the first time,” he explained. “We’re kind of like brother and sister, really. And it’s also nice to see both of us having our careers and success outside Outlander as well. It’ll be weird to say goodbye.”

Though Outlander has taken up much of his attention over the years, Heughan has kept busy in other areas of film and television as well. In 2018, he could be seen in The Spy Who Dumped Me. In 2021, he starred in SAS: Red Notice, and in 2023, he starred in Love Again. He’s also led the highly successful Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham, a documentary travel series that he leads alongside Outlander co-star Graham McTavish.
