Is there anything more American than a state fair? The delicious scent of cotton candy, hot dogs and funnel cakes fills the air, mingling with laughter and the hum of excitement. From dizzying rides to live entertainment and classic carnival games, there’s something magical about fair season—especially in South Carolina.

Old-fashioned fun at the South Carolina State Fair

Now in its 156th year, the South Carolina State Fair is living up to this year’s theme of Harvesting Happiness. Held in Columbia from October 8–19, the fair draws more than 400,000 visitors annually with its rich blend of family traditions, agricultural pride and good old-fashioned fun.

“People come to the fair because it’s all about family and tradition,” says Nancy Smith, general manager of the South Carolina State Fair, who has spent more than four decades helping the event thrive. “It’s really a celebration of our agricultural roots and the connections that bring us all together.”

She says visitors can enjoy thrilling rides, handmade crafts, agricultural exhibits, mouthwatering food and a wide range of live performances. And this year, a very special guest is helping bring even more smiles.

Sandra Lee joins the 2025 South Carolina State Fair: ‘Food brings people together’

Celebrity chef, bestselling author and co-host of Netflix’s Blue Ribbon Baking Championship, Sandra Lee will appear at the fair on October 8 and 9, joining in the celebration of the fair’s top culinary talent. Sandra will help showcase some of the fair’s best “Blue Ribbon Champions,” as they honor our military, commemorate South Carolina’s role in the American Revolution with an immersive exhibit and bring attention to breast cancer—with free admission October 12, for the 2025 Walk for Life participants.

“State Fairs are one of the most beloved pastimes in our country and I hope to help honor these Blue Ribbon Champions by meeting everyone and talking about their recipes and experiences,” Sandra tells Woman’s World. “Many of the dishes that compete are legacy recipes handed down through generations.”

Sandra, who’s been attending state fairs since childhood, adds, “Food brings people together, whether you’re 9 or 90. I believe fairs are one of the last remaining family-friendly, fun, educational traditions where everyone can find something they enjoy.”

The best South Carolina State Fair foods, according to Sandra Lee and locals

When it comes to favorite fair treats, both Nancy and Sandra have their go-tos. “I love the fries with vinegar and salt,” says Nancy with a smile. Sandra agrees—then adds, “And I go for Daley’s Jalapeño Corn Dog. It’s a bit crunchy with just the right amount of sweet.”

As night falls, one of the best ways to soak in the magic is from above. “Our Sky Glider takes you from one end of the fair to the other,” Nancy says. “You get to see the lights, hear the people and smell all the yummy food at the same time.”

A place to make memories

For Sandra, the joy of the fair is timeless and what anchors it in so many hearts. “I recall the sawdust on the ground, the aromas of the food, the thrill of the rides and the sweetness of being together,” she says. “That’s what fairs are all about.”

Nancy echoes the sentiment. “I hope people can add another little memory to their treasure chest of coming to the fair. With Sandra Lee joining us, we’ll create more memories, bring more smiles and keep this beautiful tradition alive.”

Whether you’re coming for the rides, the food, the music or the memories, the South Carolina State Fair offers something special around every corner. As Sandra puts it, “Fairs invite people to plant memories, cultivate fun and reap the rewards of 12 days filled with excitement, flavor and community.” Or, as the 4-H motto says: Make the best better.
