Wayne Northrop’s journey to acting

Born in 1947, Northrop didn’t begin acting until he was almost thirty. Instead, he spent his 20s studying communications at the University of Washington, traveling across Europe and becoming fluent in German.

Upon his return from Europe, though, Northop decided to enroll in acting classes at Seattle Community College. After a few classes, he immediately fell in love with the craft and moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue acting full-time.

Following his arrival in California, Northrop worked with the Los Angeles Actors Theatre in their production of The Kitchen, which allowed him to capture the attention of various acting agents, who would eventually secure him a spot on the small screen.

Northops’s first TV appearance came from the hit crime show Police Story, although his role remains unclear. Following that, he earned a one-episode arc on the popular sitcom Eight is Enough. From there, the actor continued to thrive, starring in singular episodes on projects like Baretta in 1978 and The Waltons in 1979–which was the last show he worked on before booking his breakout role in Dynasty

Northop starred as Michael Culhane, the family’s handsome, albeit mysterious, driver, in the original Dynasty for 15 episodes in 1981 before the studio decided to take the plot in a different direction.

“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t upset when they called me in and told me Michael was being dropped from the show,” Northop told the Miami News in 1983. “I had an incomplete feeling about the character. I still would like to go back and finish him, so to speak.”

It seemed as though Northop wasn’t the only one because he was then brought back to the show during its seventh season in 1986. They then retired his character completely.
