Fans of The Brady Bunch know the kitchen was a popular hang-out spot for the Brady Family. But Barry Williams and Christopher Knight, who played Greg and Peter, respectively, recently revealed on “The Real Brady Bros” podcast insight about some of the food the fictional family ate. Keep reading to learn more about what they had to share about all of the frequent milk and cookie scenes!

What Barry Williams and Christopher Knight said about the ‘Brady’ scene food

The Brady kids could often be seen enjoying snacks together throughout the series. But with such a large cast, one fan couldn’t help but wonder just how much food had to be used for many of the episodes.

In the March 25 episode of the podcast, Williams, 70, and Knight, 76, read a message from a listener who wanted the inside scoop about “the scenes with the milk and cookies.” She asked, “Was any of that even edible? Also, with the amount of milk poured in each glass, how many vats of milk was in the fridge at one time?”

Though the two fictional brothers couldn’t agree on whether the refrigerator in the set kitchen actually worked, they recalled that most of the milk was kept elsewhere until filming began.

“When we had a milk scene, they would bring in a half gallon or a gallon of milk and put it in the refrigerator and hold it for the shoot,” Williams said.

Why the Brady kids rarely finished their milk on-screen

Despite the large amount of milk on set, the actors never finished their full glasses. The reason? Continuity in each episode. Drinking an entire glass during a scene meant the actors would have to do the same thing every single time.

For Knight, at the time, that was easier said than done! “You as a little kid who’s been doing something prior to sitting down to act out this scene, are now thirsty,” he shared. “If you grab that milk and chug half the glass, you’re committed to now chugging half that glass anytime the camera’s on you from that point forward. You’re going to have to drink that glass of milk. But it was real milk, and the cookies were real.”

Though the cookies were in fact edible and fresh, Williams did add that they often became less appetizing as the day wore on thanks to the hot, dusty studio and long shooting schedule. But that didn’t stop Knight, who admitted he would eat just about anything as a kid!

Other behind-the-scenes facts from ‘The Real Brady Bros’ podcast

The podcast, which launched in February 2022, has provided fans with plenty of the behind-the-scenes tidbits regarding the beloved family sitcom.

Just last month, Williams and Knight revealed that the plot behind the Season 3 episode “The Not-So-Rose-Colored Glasses” was developed to make things easier for actress Eve Plumb. In the episode, Jan finds out she needs glasses when her schoolwork begins to suffer, though it takes her time to adjust to her new look.

“In this case, it’s a real article,” Knight said in the episode. “Eve wore glasses. And I gotta believe it was easier for her to wear those glasses as the character.”

While it certainly benefited Plumb for the remainder of the series, the hosts recognized that the new wardrobe addition likely took a little extra planning on the cinematography side. Since what she was wearing were real glasses, light bouncing off the lenses could be a tricky issue!

The series may have ended 51 years ago, but that hasn’t stopped Williams and Knight from maintaining a close bond over the years. The pair has continued to work on many projects together outside of the nostalgia-focused podcast.

“We constantly cycle back to get back in touch with one another,” Knight said in a November interview. “And it’s sort of like being foxhole buddies.”

Williams agreed with his former TV brother, and added that the cast members were able to form a lasting and deep connection thanks to the life-changing experience.
