Before he was a branded member of the Dutton Ranch, serving the family at the forefront of Yellowstone by whatever means necessary, Ian Bohen was known by most as the handsome werewolf Peter Hale on the hit MTV series Teen Wolf. Being an integral member of the cast who reprised his role in 2023’s Teen Wolf: The Movie, Bohen found his Hollywood footing on this supernatural teen series, growing himself a loyal following, leaning into the faithful fandom that shows of this nature so often have. Today, you’re likely to catch him with a cowboy hat on, wooing a country music superstar on our screens (how adorable was his on-screen Yellowstone romance with Lainey Wilson?!) Here, read all about Ian Bohen, a beloved fixture in the Yellowstone bunkhouse.

Ian Bohen’s early career

The 48-year-old California-born actor made his screen debut in 1992 on the television series The Torkelsons, and in its wake came a role in the 1994 film Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner, playing the part of young Wyatt. In the early days of his career, Bohen could be seen making appearances across countless shows including Walker, Texas Ranger, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Boy Meets World, Dawson’s Creek, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Any Day Now and countless others.

In 2007, he originated the part of Roy Hazelitt on Mad Men, but it was in 2011 when he took on the part of Peter Hale in MTV’s Teen Wolf that he found mainstream recognition. Though he began his time on the series as an enemy, his character development as the show progressed has earned him his fan-favorite status. In 2023, he even brought Peter to life once again in the film adaptation of the series.

His time on Teen Wolf came to an end in 2017 and shortly after, he started bringing to life Ryan on Yellowstone—a character much different than the one he had been previously playing. “Peter was a role where you played chess mentally with the other actors in a drama,” he told Pop Culturalist in 2020. “Yellowstone was the complete opposite. I feel like I am the chess piece on the board, physically moving around, and the fighting that I do is physical. You have to learn how to do just as much without saying as much. You’re using actions, abilities, and kinetic things like riding a horse or shooting a gun. You have to give up some old habits, resharpen new ones, and then show up and say your lines and stand on your mark. It always ends up working out.”

Since his Yellowstone debut, Bohen could also be seen in shows like Superman & Lois in 2022, in which he starred alongside his previous Teen Wolf co-star Tyler Hoechlin.

It fills my soul with joy and happiness,” he said to Krypton Site of tormenting Hoechlin on yet another TV series, “because he’s playing this iconic, really perfect, honorable vision of American iconic culture, from when I was a kid up until…it will be forever.” He continued, “I’ll just tug on his cape all day long, if I can, just to keep him humble. Of course, it’s all in good fun, and it just makes it more enjoyable to start the day on set when we’re ribbing each other.”

Most recently, Bohen can be seen in films like Miss Cleo: Her Rise and Fall (2024) and Air Force One Down (2024). And don’t miss him as Ryan in the current season of Yellowstone, available to watch on Paramount.
