Curling up under a blanket with a lit pumpkin candle and an aesthetic autumn movie on screen is the perfect scenario for the forthcoming cooler days. Although it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what a “fall” movie is, we like to associate the term with a film that makes us feel warm and fuzzy; one that we love to enjoy in the autumn months. Before Halloween movie season arrives in all its spooky glory, here are 8 of our favorite cozy fall movies to enjoy this autumn.
1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Rom-Com queen Meg Ryan stars as college grad Sally Albright, who shares a ride home from college with Harry Burns (Billy Crystal). The two spend the entire ride arguing about whether men and women can just be friends without lust getting in the way. Ten years later, the duo meets again in a bookstore and try to remain just friends without sex becoming an issue between them.
2. Little Women (2019)
Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1868 novel Little Women gets a fresh take in this 2019 film, making it a perfect autumn watch.The four March sisters go through the ups and downs of transitioning to womanhood, while making decisions that will alter the course of their lives. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Timothée Chalamet.
3. Sweet November (2001)
Nelson (Keanu Reeves) and Sara (Charlize Theron) meet in a DMV and, while feeling things for each other, neither are ready to fully commit. Instead, they agree to a one-month relationship, after which they will go their separate ways, no strings attached. However, as their month-long affair goes on, both Nelson and Sara start to truly fall for each other.
4. Autumn in New York (2000)
Will Keane (Richard Gere) is an infamous playboy, on the verge of turning 50, with no signs of slowing down. That is until he meets Charlotte Fielding (Winona Ryder), a terminally ill 21-year-old woman who is ready to experience adulthood. Soon, Will’s misconceptions about women and relationships are turned upside down.
5. October Sky (1999)
Based on the true story of Homer Hickam, who was expected to duplicate his father’s coal mining footsteps, October Sky follow’s Homer’s passion for rocket science. After Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) sees Sputnik 1 shoot across the sky, he begins to build his own rockets with the help of friends and his teacher, Miss Riley (Laura Dern). Although his father doesn’t approve of his passion project, Homer hopes he will be able to have a better life in rocket science.
6. Dead Poets Society (1989)
Starring Robin Williams as the new English teacher, John Keating, who starts at a traditional all-boys preparatory school. John uses very unusual methods to connect with his students, who all face a lot of pressure from their parents, but eventually learn to break free from the high standards they are expected to adhere to.
7. Mystic Pizza (1988)
The iconic Mystic Pizza stars Julia Roberts as Daisy, Annabeth Gish as her sister, Kat, and Lili Taylor as friend Jojo. The three girls work together in a pizza restaurant in the small town of Mystic, while sharing every aspect of their lives, from love to hopes and dreams to plans for the future.
8. Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
Yes, another Julia Roberts film, but we love to watch this one in the autumn. UCLA grad Katherine (Roberts) is hired to teach art history at a prestigious women’s college in 1953. Katherine hopes to break some of the traditions embraced by the college and inspire her students to live their own lives.
