In case you missed it—or the fact that another Audrey Hepburn birthday has come around (she would have been 97)— there’s a highly anticipated biopic of the star coming and, no, it’s not the one starring Lily Collins. That’s right, there’s another feature film coming and this time it’s centered around Audrey’s relationship with designer Hubert de Givenchy. Below, we share everything you need to know about the project, including how Audrey’s son Sean Hepburn Ferrer feels about the news.

What we know so far about the new Audrey Hepburn biopic

For the past couple of years, Wayfarer Studios has been working on getting their film Dinner With Audrey off the ground. The plot of the project revolves around Audrey Hepburn (played by Thomasin McKenzie) after she is sent off to Paris to find a wardrobe for her 1964 film Sabrina. Along the way she meets fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy (played by Ansel Elgort), whom she forms an instant connection with. It’s a tale of fashion, fact and just a little bit of fiction.

Dinner with Audrey is a story grounded in history and encapsulates one of the most iconic creative partnerships across fashion and film,” president of production and development for Wayfarer Studios Andrew Calof told Deadline in a statement.  “As filmmakers, we feel the weight and responsibility of honoring these two icons and portraying their friendship as accurately as possible. Every element of this production has been approached with precision, care and respect. We couldn’t be more excited to tell their story.”

Currently, there is no trailer available for the film. Deadline did release a few images of McKenzie and Elgort in the film over the weekend, but those pictures haven’t been made available to the general media yet.

How the Hepburn family feels about the Audrey Hepburn biopic

Over the years, many have wondered how the Hepburn family feels about all the Audrey documentaries, books and biopics that have been released. And now, Audrey’s eldest son Sean is shining some light on their reactions. In a recent interview with Woman’s World to promote his book Intimate Audrey: An Authorized Biography, Sean said that he finds the whole idea of Dinner with Audrey “charming.”

“It’s about an imaginary night between Audrey Hepburn and Givenchy,” he explained. “This film basically imagines what happened after my mother and Givenchy met. Maybe they go to dinner and spend an evening together. I don’t know the details of it, but it sounds charming.”

Get to know the cast of ‘Dinner With Audrey’

As mentioned above, Audrey will be played by McKenzie, who is best known for Leave No Trace (2018), Jojo Rabbit (2019), Last Night in Soho (2021) and Old (2021). Givenchy will be played by Elgort, whom most people recognize from The Fault in Our Stars (2014), Baby Driver (2017), West Side Story (2021) and the Divergent series (2014, 2015 and 2016).

They will be joined by Miranda Richardson (The Yellow Tie and Rams), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water and 99 Homes) and Judy Greer (Dead Winter and 27 Dresses). The film will be written by Kara Holden and directed by Abe Sylvia.

“She [Audrey] is a huge icon of mine,” McKenzie said per the Steve Varley Show. “And I know as a fan that people will be very critical of the person playing her. So, there was a bit of hesitation [when it came to accepting the role], but I feel unbelievably honored and nervous. Lucky for me, it’s about a very specific time in her life, so it’s not like I’m doing an overarching film on everything. It’s a specific moment in time.”

‘Dinner With Audrey’ release date

As of publication there is no release date for Dinner With Audrey. Deadline did report that the film is currently in production though, meaning that we should have an update soon.
