Go Behind the Scenes of ‘Splash’ With 9 Whimsical Photos of Daryl Hannah, Tom Hanks and Ron Howard on Set
Plus, learn why the movie almost didn't get made—and how an appearance on 'Happy Days' led to Tom Hanks' breakout
The 1984 Ron Howard film Splash cleverly combined rom-com and fantasy, creating a whimsical love story for the ages, and over 40 years after its release, it remains charming and funny as ever. On paper, the tale of a man falling for a mermaid in contemporary New York City sounds a bit silly, but Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah totally sold it thanks to their dazzling onscreen chemistry, and the film spawned many iconic moments (and introduced the girls’ name Madison to the world, thanks to the scene in which Hannah innocently chose a name from a street sign!)
With Howard’s latest movie, the historical thriller Eden, now in theaters, we’re taking a look back at rare behind-the-scenes photos from the making of Splash to see how the crowd-pleasing director created ’80s movie magic.
