Kate Winslet has showcased some serious range over the years. We’ve watched her shine in dramatic roles like Rose in Titanic (1997), show off her rom-com charm in The Holiday (2006), and pull us in with Mare of Easttown, but her latest project is one like never before. Though the 50-year-old English starlet will be stepping in front of the camera for her newest film, Goodbye June, she will simultaneously be making her directorial debut. Here, read all about the upcoming movie, Winslet’s role as director, the Goodbye June cast and when you can see the film for yourself.

‘Goodbye June’ movie: What is the emotional plot about?

Goodbye June follows a family of four adult siblings who must come together when their mother, June’s, health takes a turn for the worse. As is often the case during situations such as these, the stress of their mother’s deteriorating condition, combined with the siblings’ complicated relationships and dynamics, makes for quite the ordeal. In spite of her physical state and the tension amongst her children and husband, June doesn’t let go of the spirited woman she’s always been as her family confronts the possibility that she won’t be around forever in this touching tale of family, love and loss.

“It’s about the human condition,” star and director Kate Winslet told Tudum. “I hope that people will recognize themselves in the characters. It’s a film about family. Some of our most complicated relationships in life are with the people we love the most in the world, the people we are closest to, the people we need the most for support and care.”

Kate Winslet’s directorial debut: why she had to tell this story

This film, being Kate’s directorial debut, is certainly special in its own right, but there’s an element to this movie that made it even more one-of-a-kind for the multi-talented starlet: the screenplay was written by her 21-year-old son, Joe Anders.

Joe would never want anybody to think the film only got made because of his mum,” the actress and director told The Times. “But I’ve said to both many times that people will say whatever they want—it doesn’t matter. As a mum, all one wants for their children is for them to be happy and there was no way I could discourage either of them from wanting to follow this path,” she said, referring to both Joe and her daughter, Mia, who has also broken out into the acting world.

As for stepping into the director role, Winslet told Grazia Daily, “Part of the reason why there are so few female directors—even though it’s changing a bit—is because we have children. It’s just not the easiest thing to walk away and go to work.” She continued, “You’re not just doing the pre-production period and shooting the film. It’s everything! As soon as we wrapped, I went straight into the edit, the sound mix, the music record…I was across absolutely all of it.”
