A Man on the Inside Season 2 is officially over, so, private investigators, it’s time for us to grab our magnifying glasses and investigate if there will be a Season 3. After all, the finale left us with so many questions about Charles Nieuwendyk’s (Ted Danson) future. But, if there is going to be another season, what would it be about? And is creator Michael Schur on board with it? We break down everything we know below.

‘A Man on the Inside’ Season 2 recap

A Man on the Inside Season 2 follows Charles as he goes undercover at Wheeler College to find a laptop with $400 million worth of information. Things quickly take a turn when Charles learns that the school’s president, Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield), plans to accept an illegal donation, which eventually leads to him being blackmailed by Holly Bodgemark (Jill Talley), who also stole the laptop. In the end, Charles decides not to turn Holly in, but Jack does end up in hot water after the college newspaper reveals what he’s been up to.

And if all of that wasn’t dramatic enough, there’s another issue Charles is dealing with—a matter of the heart. During his time at Wheeler College, he falls in love with a woman named Mona (his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen) and even agrees to move to Croatia with her, though ultimately changes his mind.

“Charles discovers that he’s still a little fear-based, and he meets somebody who’s just total love, no fear. Just, ‘Let’s live, stay in the moment, and have joy be the word for the day,’” Danson explained to Tudum by Netflix. “My character loves it and is excited by it, and he thinks that he can run with her. But then he bumps into his limits.”

The fact that Mona is played by Danson’s real-life wife makes their romantic moments that much sweeter.

“There was only one possible person to play that role, and it was Mary,” Schur told Tudum. “They are so in love with each other, and they respect and admire each other so much. And frankly, it’s very annoying. It makes the rest of us feel bad about our lives, that they set an impossible standard.”

Will Netflix renew ‘A Man on the Inside’ for a third season?

Currently, there is no official word on whether or not there will be A Man on the Inside Season 3, but since the second season ends with Charles getting his private investigator license, it’s safe to say that the show’s crew is definitely thinking about it—and an interview with show creator Schur confirms this.

“If we get a third season, the themes will remain the same and we’ll add some new ones. Among the ones that I’m interested in exploring are the state of the American city,” Schur told TV Insider earlier this year. “It’s very interesting to me for similar reasons that we set the show in a liberal arts school in the second season. It’s a subject that gets demonized all the time. I’ve lived in small towns and I’ve lived in suburbia, and I’ve lived in cities, and I think cities are great and they’re wonderful and exciting.”

“It’s a place where a whole bunch of people come together from different places and get to meet each other and experience what it’s like to live with each other,” he continued.

Seasons 1 and 2 of A Man on the Inside are currently available to stream on Netflix.
