Josh Brolin on ‘Goonies’ Reboot Hopes: ‘If Spielberg Approves It, You Know It’s Going to Be Good’
Scripts exist, the cast is ready, but one thing still stands in the way of 'Goonies 2'
After 40 years of The Goonies and no sequel, fans and the original cast alike aren’t sure whether a reboot would be possible. But that doesn’t mean the stars aren’t hopeful to reprise their popular roles once more.
Josh Brolin, who starred in the 1985 film as Brandon “Brand” Walsh, shared his thoughts on a potential reboot of The Goonies and whether it would be worth it to revive an already perfect story.
“I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it [is].”
He also shared what a reboot would look like with the original cast 40 years after the first. “It’s like, ‘Oh, we came out with another,’ and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well,” he joked. “What are you going to do? I don’t know.”
Multiple scripts have been written

It’s no surprise that follow-up attempts have been made to create a second Goonies film, but Brolin shared that none of them have been quite right. Especially because the original producer and co-writer, Steven Spielberg, knows what he wants in a script.
“Maybe it could be great,” Brolin shared. “If it’s great, you’ll know. If Spielberg approves it, you know it’s going to be good.”
Spielberg has been responsible for some of the biggest blockbusters, including Jaws (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993). So, it seems, having his stamp of approval would be the official go-ahead to create a second film.
The actor also shared that there have been scripts created over the years, despite no movie being made.
“I think there’s been five scripts so far through the years and he hasn’t approved anything yet,” the actor explained. “Spielberg is picky, and he has a reason to be because he has great taste.”
What Steven Spielberg has said about a sequel
Of course, it all depends on Spielberg and whether he is interested in creating a new film. But with such a successful first movie, it can be hard to follow it up, especially decades later.
“Every couple of years, we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water,” Spielberg said. “The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the ’80s.”
