In 1997, Julia Roberts further cemented her status as a rom-com darling when she starred opposite Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend’s Wedding.

The film followed a woman named Julianne who made a pact with her longtime friend, Michael, stating that if by 28 they were both unmarried, they’d throw in the towel and tie the knot with each other. When just a few days short of her 28th birthday, she learns that Michael is engaged to a vibrant 20-year-old woman, Julianne realizes her feelings for her longtime friend, and so begins her journey toward tearing the two apart.

This ’90s classic has earned itself a cult following over the years, with folks calling for its reboot for decades—and now, they’re in luck. Though it’s been speculated for years that a new installment of the film would be hitting screens, sources have revealed that a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel is in the early stages of production. Here, everything we know about the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel, plus what star Dermot Mulroney hopes to see unfold on the screen.

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel is in the works

Over the summer, Deadline reported that a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel was in the works. Though there hasn’t been an update since this initial announcement, the news did come with the reveal that the screenplay would be written by Celine Song, who was the writer and director behind Materialists (2025). While the director has yet to be revealed and there’s no indication that Song will be leading in that capacity, fans are already hopeful at what’s to come.

Who will be in the ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel?

At this point in time, nobody has been announced as far as casting goes. While many are hopeful that the original film’s cast will return, there’s also the possibility that this sequel could focus on a new set of characters. There’s been chatter surrounding this project for quite some time, and some of the original cast members have even opened up about the possibility over the years. Back in July, while promoting the debut season of The Hunting Wives, actor Dermot Mulroney revealed to The New York Post, I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

Since then, the actor has opened up about the sequel even more. In an exclusive conversation with Woman’s World, when asked what he’d like to possibly see for his character should he play a part in the sequel, Mulroney shared, “I’m going to say something, and it’ll be the opposite, but boy, am I game for whatever they cook up. And the sooner, the better, that I’ll say. But I don’t know any information on the practicality of it or any of the content. I love it. I hope it happens right away.”

Julia Roberts briefly mentioned her potential involvement in the film during an interview with Variety as well. When asked whether she was approached to be involved, the actress shared, “No, they’re talking to me.”

Whether it’s Julia back in the driver’s seat or a fresh take on this beloved story, one thing’s for sure: this sequel is a love letter to everyone who’s ever believed in the power of friendship, second chances, and happily-ever-afters. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes us!
