The 1982 film Blade Runner is widely considered to be one of the most stylish and influential science fiction movies of all time, and 43 years after it was released, it remains prescient as ever. The film, directed by Ridley Scott and adapted from the 1968 Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, takes place in a neon-meets-noir version of 2019 L.A. (yes, we are now officially living six years after Blade Runner is set!) and stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a police officer tasked with hunting down humanoid robots known as replicants, all while the twisty narrative raises provocative questions about technology, consciousness and what it truly means to be human.

The cyberpunk aesthetic of Blade Runner is instantly recognizable, and the film’s visuals are even more impressive when you consider that they were achieved with practical effects and rendered years before the advent of CGI. Read on to see rare behind-the-scenes photos that show how the film’s dystopian vision came to life.
