Go Behind the Scenes of ‘Basic Instinct’ With 11 Seductive Photos From the Set of the Stylish ’90s Thriller
See how Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas and director Paul Verhoeven brought the sexy blockbuster to life
In the ’90s, erotic thrillers ruled the screen, and Basic Instinct, directed by Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven and starring Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas, was the biggest and boldest embodiment of the stylish genre. The twisty 1992 film starred Stone as a femme fatale who becomes a suspect in a murder case being investigated by Douglas, leading to a twisty game of cat and mouse, and it became not a pop culture sensation thanks to its over-the-top sensibility (who can forget that interrogation scene?)
Basic Instinct inspired countless imitators in its wake. Over 30 years after its release, it remains a trashy gem, and Stone’s simultaneously evil and brilliant character still fascinates. The original film’s screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas, recently announced he’s working on a reboot of the film, and in anticipation of a potential erotic thriller comeback, we’re taking a revealing look behind the scenes of the scandalous ’90s blockbuster.
