Princess Diana Wore Her Engagement Ring Long After Her Divorce So Her Sons Wouldn’t Worry

Even after it was announced that the Princess of Wales was separating from Prince Charles, she continued to wear the blue sapphire ring he gave her. It seems odd that she would want the constant reminder of her soon-to-be ex-husband on her finger, but it turns out the reason Princess Diana wore her engagement ring after the divorce is because of her kids: She didn’t want news to affect her children.

Prince William and Prince Harry were only 10 and nine, respectively, when their parents announced their separation in 1992. In order to keep up appearances for her sons, Princess Diana continued to wear her engagement and wedding rings, especially at public events. She would wear both bands for another four years, including during a visit to Eton College even after the decree nisi — a document issued by the court that states that a person has met all the requirements to obtain a divorce— was issued. Why? Because she knew she was going to be photographed.

We always knew Princess Diana was a hands-on mom, but we had no idea she would go to such great lengths — even when it probably caused her a lot of pain and hurt — to make sure her sons didn’t worry. It wasn’t until two days after the visit to Eton that Princess Diana finally removed her rings once and for all. That day, she attended a movie premiere in London sporting a bright red manicure

After the divorce was finalized, Princess Diana was spotted with an enormous aquamarine sparkler on her left ring finger. You might remember it as the same jewel Meghan Markle wore to her wedding reception. And, of course, we all know what happened to the sapphire: Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with it. We’re sure that marriage will have a much happier ending.
