Luke Grimes Returns as Kayce Dutton in ‘Marshals’: Everything to Know About the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff
The beloved Dutton is trading ranch life for law enforcement—and fans are in for quite a journey
It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen the Dutton family shine on our screens, and while we’ve certainly missed their bond, the drama and the allure of Yellowstone, fans of the original series don’t have to wait much longer to get their fix. Marshals, formerly titled Y: Marshals, is the spinoff set to follow the youngest member of the Dutton family, Kayce, and his journey after the events of the original series. With a premiere date set and CBS already giving fans a glimpse at what’s to come in the debut season, allow us to break down everything there is to know about Marshals.
How did things end for Kayce in ‘Yellowstone’?
Kayce’s journey on Yellowstone was defined by loyalty, conflict and family, and throughout the show’s run, he was one of the most beloved characters not only for the intensity he brought when the ranch needed him most but also for the softer side we often saw when it came to his son Tate and wife Monica. While there were many instances over the course of his journey on the series where he was torn in two different directions, he was a character we always found ourselves rooting for.
In the final season of Yellowstone, Kayce’s expedition throughout the show’s several seasons comes to a head when he sells the Dutton Ranch to Chief Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation for $1.25 an acre—the same price his ancestors purchased the land for originally. It was a symbolic way to conclude the Dutton story, and while the Broken Rock Tribe prepared for life on the Yellowstone, Kayce stipulated that he could have the East Camp to raise his family.

What will ‘Marshals’ be about?
Knowing how Yellowstone ended, many were curious about what Kayce’s next chapter might look like—and based on what we know about Marshals, we can’t imagine things are going to be all that peaceful for him. A skilled cowboy and decorated Navy SEAL, Kayce has quite a unique set of skills, and in Marshals, he will be using those skills when he joins a unit of US Marshals protecting Montana. According to the show’s official logline, Kayce and his team must “balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidantes Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) from the Broken Rock reservation.”
Who is going to be in ‘Marshals’?
While we’re thrilled to see Luke Grimes reprise his role as Kayce Dutton, fans of the show can also expect to see a few additional familiar faces. Gil Birmingham returns as Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty joins the crew once again as Mo and young Tate, Kayce’s son—played by Brecken Merrill—is all grown up in this new installment. However, one character that doesn’t seem to be making a return is Kayce’s wife, Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille. While her fate at this time is unknown, fans have long been speculating what’s to come for her character. The series will also introduce a few new faces as we get to know Kayce’s US Marshals crew. His new teammates include Miles Kittle, played by Tatanka Means, Andrea Cruz, played by Ash Santos, and Belle Skinner, portrayed by Arielle Kebbel.

As for what fans can expect, Grimes told People he thinks viewers will be satisfied. “We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” the actor shared with the outlet. “If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’—we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”
Tune in to the premiere of Marshals, airing on CBS on March 1 at 8 p.m.
