TOP STORIES

Soap operas are known for their preposterous plotlines and melodramatic material. Long-running series like Days of Our Lives and General Hospital have featured quite a few crazy story points such as evil twins, kidnappings and murder. But there is nothing quite like the plot twists in the daytime drama, Passions.

Passions follows the powerful and wealthy Crane family, who rule the idyllic town of Harmony from their mansion. Of course, the town seems picture-perfect from the outside, but the goings-on are anything but normal. Audiences experience the ups and downs of the lives of the Lopez-Fitzgeralds, the Bennetts and the Russells.

The twisted folks of Harmony were on Passions from 1999 to 2008, mainly starring Lindsay Hartley, McKenzie Westmore, Galen Gering and Juliet Mills. Although most of your favorite soaps have been running for decades, Passions was a short-lived one, full of crazy themes you have probably forgotten. Get a glimpse into the outrageous Passions plots that will remind you just how insane this soap opera was.

1.  When Precious the Orangutan joined the soap opera

One of the most interesting storylines in Passions was when the orangutan Bam Bam joined the series as Nurse Precious, who cared for the elderly Edna Wallace. The real-life orangutan was added to the cast to add a bit of absurdity to the storyline, which was achieved when they introduced Precious’ romantic feelings for the human character Luis.

2. ‘Passions’ goes under the sea with the introduction of Siren, the mermaid

The Passions mermaid, Siren, portrayed by Brandi Burkhardt, was conjured up by the witch Endora as a ploy to break up the couple, Kay and Miguel. After 60+ episodes of mischief caused by Siren, Endora turned her back into a doll with magic and eventually made her disappear.

3. ‘The Walking Dead’ meets ‘Passions’?

After Charity began a relationship with Miguel, Kay decided to take matters into her own hands to rid herself of Charity. First, she sent Charity through a door to hell (literally), where she was later rescued from. But Kay then managed to trap Charity in a block of ice and create her alter ego, Zombie Charity, who began torturing the residents of Harmony.

4. ‘Passions’ had their very own Pinnocchio

Timmy Lenox (Josh Ryan Evans) was a doll created by the town witch Tabitha Lenox. The doll was created by Tabitha to be her companion. But the doll had dreams of being a real boy (just like Pinocchio) and was transformed by the Little Angel Girl. Timmy sadly died not long after becoming a real boy due to injuries inflicted by Zombie Charity, due to the actor’s actual passing.

5. Sheridan Crane being close friends with Princess Diana

One of the more interesting storylines of the series occurred in the early days, as it was announced that Sheridan Crane (McKenzie Westmore) was close friends with Princess Diana. Sheridan was considered the “American Princess” and often compared her life to Diana’s, supposedly speaking with her on the phone just before the fatal car crash.

The storyline revolves around Sheridan’s inability to cope with Diana’s death and her worry of suffering the same fate. So, it was no surprise when, a few episodes later, Sheridan was chased by paparazzi into the same tunnel where Diana’s car had crashed and almost succumbed to injuries. But in typical Passions fashion, Sheridan heard Diana’s voice telling her to “go back” rather than towards the white light.

6. An iceberg wasn’t responsible for sinking the Titanic, according to ‘Passions’

Princess Diana was not the only real-life reference that was made in Passions. The sinking of the Titanic was brought up, too, and someone from the series actually took credit for its sinking. Tabitha, the ancient witch, was really the one behind the demise of the ship, all as a ploy to manipulate the residents of Harmony.
