The Chosen Season 5 is finally here, taking viewers straight to Jerusalem for Holy Week, starting on Palm Sunday. Following Season 4’s emotional ending, this new chapter will capture powerful biblical moments, including the Last Supper, Judas’ betrayal and Jesus’ arrest.

As Holy Week transpires before viewers’ eyes, the 8-episode season will cover the same events described in the Bible in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John: Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey to fulfill a prophecy in the book of Zechariah, the Last Supper, which is the final meal that Jesus shares with his disciples and the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested to be crucified the very next day.

What happens in ‘The Chosen’ season 5?

Since fans are accustomed to the show following the chronological order of the Bible, we’re anticipating Season 6 (which has been said will include the crucifixion) and Season 7 (which will show Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, leaving the Disciples and his human life behind) will be emotionally weighty — requiring a box of tissues.

And Season 5 of The Chosen will provide the lead-up to these poignant moments to come.

“I’m really excited and proud of Season 5. It’s on a whole other level. People have no idea what’s in store,” Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus told Woman’s World. “I mean, we’ve leveled up the show in ways that I don’t think anybody expected. “The emotional range that we see from Jesus has never been captured in this way before. Nobody’s ever really seen depictions of the things that we’re doing because nobody’s ever attempted it before. So I’m really excited for people to see what’s in store.”

“We show you the joy of worship and the triumph of Jesus coming in as the king of the Jews and the son of David,” said Jenkins to USA Today. “But we also take a moment — you see this in the teaser — to get inside Jesus’ head and know that it would have been bittersweet.” He said Jesus knows what’s coming in this moment.

‘The Chosen’ season 5 release date & theatrical premiere

Just as The Chosen director Dallas Jenkins did with the release of Season 4, Season 5 will also premiere first in theaters in three batches.

In the US and Canada, Episodes 1 and 2 will be released on March 27, 2025, with the rest of the season rolling out in three parts over four weeks throughout April 2025.

After its release in theaters, Season 5 of The Chosen will start streaming on multiple platforms sometime in 2025.

Jenkins previously stated that his decision for the theatrical release ahead of the release of Season 4 to streaming had more to do with the experience he wanted to create for viewers as they watched for the first time: “This season [Season 4] we’ve got significant biblical events happening like the death of John the Baptist and the raising of Lazarus from the dead,” says Jenkins. “These moments are better watching with a crowd and on the big screen.”

Season 5 will include even more of these crowd-pleasing, captivating moments that unravel beautifully on the big screen.

Need a refresh? ‘The Chosen’ season 4 finale recap

[Season 4 spoilers ahead!]

After the unfolding of John the Baptist’s ministry and death, the death of Ramah, the doubts of Thomas, the healing of Gaius’ son, Judas wrestling with his coming betrayal, the fall of Quintas, the forgiveness and reconciliation of Peter and Matthew and the raising of Lazarus back from the dead, viewers are left on a cliff-hanger in the last few minutes of Episode 8 of Season 4.

Matthew and Simon the Zealot head into the city to find the donkey that Jesus will ride on saying, “The Master is in need of it.”

Once they return to Jesus with the colt, the people in Jerusalem are shown beginning to prepare for his arrival.

Jesus tells the Disciples, “The time has come. I must do the will of my Father in Heaven. I know you all have many questions, and there will be a time for those. But for now, will you come with me?”

Peter answers for the group: “Lord, where else would we go? You alone have the words of eternal life.”

Jesus assures them: “No matter what happens this week, no matter what you see, or feel or think or do, I want you to know that in this world, I loved you as my own—and I will love you until the end.”

With that, he sits on the donkey and heads into Jerusalem marking the start of Holy Week where Season 5 of The Chosen will begin.
