If we were to use one word to describe Episode 4 of the highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff show Dutton Ranch, it would be intense. Spoiler alert: today’s episode is a heartbreaking one, with an entire scene dedicated to Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser, 51), Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly, 48), Zachariah (Marc Menchaca) and Azul (J. R. Villarreal) having to put down their cows one by one to keep the deadly foot-and-mouth disease from spreading. It’s hard to watch and has left many viewers wondering if the disease was actually a real thing on ranches in the United States. Well, as it turns out, it is, but it’s not as common as it appeared on screen. To learn more, keep reading.
What happened in ‘Dutton Ranch’ Episode 4?
During Episode 4, Beth and Rip decide to cull and then bury all their cattle. They did this because the animals were infected with foot-and-mouth disease, which they caught from an unvaccinated cow that Rip bought at auction in Episode 2, but they didn’t learn he was sick until Episode 3.
After they killed the livestock, Beth and Rip take some time to debrief on what happened. It’s at that moment that Beth tells her husband, “I made some calls earlier. Got answers you’re not gonna like. All the vet paperwork, the blood tests, all of it forged. Cattle broker, he f-ck-d us, baby.”
They then confront the person who sold them the cow—J.R. Simon (Chuck McCollum)—and tell him he has “30 seconds to get the f-ck out of this trailer and out of Rio Paloma, and if I ever f-ck-ng see your f-ck-ng face again, you’re dead.”

J.R. then leaves, Rip burns down the trailer and tells Beth, “This isn’t on you to fix,” even though she tells him that she’s going to “do whatever I have to do” to resolve the situation.
The episode then ends, and viewers are left to wonder what’s going to happen next.
Is foot-and-mouth disease real?
Yes, foot-and-mouth disease is real and is one of the biggest fears for ranchers. It can affect cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and other cloven-hoofed animals and result in severe drooling, loss of appetite, and lameness. It can also impact an animal’s milk and meat production. The disease spreads through direct contact with the infected animal, inhalation of virus particles and contact with contaminated objects like vehicles, feed or clothing.
All recent outbreaks of the disease in cattle have happened abroad, and luckily, there hasn’t been a case in the United States since 1929. But just this April, China reported 219 cases of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle.
The reason the U.S. has been so protected is that the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) strictly prohibits livestock imports from countries with active FMD. A lot of ranchers also choose to vaccinate their animals for an extra layer of protection.

Because of all those regulations, it’s a bit weird that Beth and Rip somehow managed to get the one cow that had the disease in almost 100 years. Sure, the animal had fake vaccination records, but the odds of that actually happening today in America are very slim. But hey, that’s life in a Taylor Sheridan show. It’s filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences that only the Dutton family and their friends could survive.
