Here are three tips and the recipe so you can make the tastiest batch of sausage gravy.
The ingredients in sausage gravy
This gravy is traditionally made with sausage meat and drippings, milk, flour, salt and pepper. These ingredients are cooked until it forms a velvety gravy. Sausage gravy is popular in southern regions of the U.S. and is a beloved dish for breakfast or brunch.
3 tips for making hearty and flavorful sausage gravy
To ensure the best results for your gravy, keep these three tips in mind as you’re making it.
1. Brown the sausage in an even layer in the skillet.
One of the first steps is browning the sausage, which cooks the meat and renders the fat. It’s important to arrange the sausage in a single, even layer in the pan so it browns properly. If you’re whipping up a large amount of gravy, feel free to brown the sausage in batches.
2. Stir the flour into browned sausage and grease.
Incorporating the flour in with the sausage and fat helps build the gravy base. The flour will stick to the meat and thicken the mixture once you add milk and let it simmer.
3. Keep extra milk handy if the gravy becomes too thick.
If the gravy starts to thicken too much, stir in a little extra milk until it reaches your desired consistency. Then, it’s ready to pour on top of warm, fluffy biscuits and enjoy.

Sausage Gravy
Ingredients:
- 1 lb breakfast sausage, hot or mild
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- 3 to 4 cups whole milk, more to taste
- ½ tsp seasoned salt
- 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper, more to taste
- Biscuits, warmed, for serving
Directions:
- Active: 25 mins
- Total: 25 mins
- Yield: 12 servings
- With your finger, tear small pieces of sausage and add them in a single layer to a large heavy skillet. Brown the sausage over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Sprinkle on half the flour and stir so that the sausage soaks it all up, then add more little by little. Stir it around and cook it for another minute or so, then pour in the milk, stirring constantly.
- Cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens. (This may take a good 10 to 12 minutes.) Sprinkle in the seasoned salt and pepper and continue cooking until very thick and luscious. If it gets too thick too soon, just splash in another ½ cup of milk or more if needed. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
- Spoon the sausage gravy over warm biscuits and serve immediately!
