Whether you like classic French vanilla or a nice holiday flavor, adding a splash of creamer to your coffee will surely boost your spirits. But if you’re monitoring your sugar intake, you may need to be more vigilant about your selection. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced an International Delight coffee creamer recall due to mislabeled products. Keep reading to learn more details and how to keep yourself safe.

Details of the International Delight coffee creamer recall

On October 12, Danone U.S., a food and beverage company based in New York, recalled more than 10,000 bottles of International Delight Home Alone Peppermint Mocha Zero Sugar coffee creamers due to mislabeling. The creamers were labeled as ‘zero sugar’ but actually contain sugar.

The mislabeled creamer was removed from stores in 13 states, including Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

No product code or lot number was shared for this flavor of the Home Alone collection. However, International Delight noted that the recall impacts all Peppermint Mocha Zero Sugar creamers, with the best-by date being Feb. 25, 2025.

Other ‘Home Alone’ creamers were not affected by the recall

International Delight’s special Home Alone holiday creamers have been on shelves since July, so if you purchased the Peppermint Mocha Zero Sugar variety since then, checking those best-by dates is super important.

Other flavors of the Home Alone creamer, including regular Peppermint Mocha, Hot Chocolate Marshmallow and Frosted Sugar Cookie, have not been recalled.

What is a class II FDA recall?

Regarding recalls, the FDA has three different classes depending on the severity of the item being removed. The International Delight “Home Alone” Peppermint Mocha Zero Sugar coffee creamers were identified as class II, which “is a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

This identification falls between the most and least severe risk categories: Class I is the highest, and Class III is the lowest.

Why sugar mislabeled as zero sugar is a concern

For this recall, the regular International Delight Peppermint Mocha, which contains five grams of sugar per serving, could have been mislabeled as “zero sugar,” or the Zero Sugar Peppermint Mocha may have accidentally gotten sugar added. It’s unclear which instance happened.

Since this coffee creamer was removed for mislabeling, there’s nothing inherently unsafe about consumption. However, if you’re monitoring your sugar intake, drinking this can cause a spike or other potential health concerns.

If you did purchase the festive flavor, you can return it to the store for a full refund and throw it away. The FDA hasn’t reported any illnesses from this recall, but if too much added sugar is a medical concern, it’s best to dispose of the mislabeled creamers.

In 2023, International Delight released a Grinch-themed holiday line; this year, they traded that for the classic Home Alone films. The coffee creamers feature an animated image of Kevin McCallister screaming with cheerful holiday and wintery backgrounds that match each flavor.

The Peppermint Mocha flavor is the only one available in a zero-sugar option, but all the flavors are made with real milk and cream and can be enjoyed in hot or iced coffee.
