McDonald’s Egg McMuffin turns 50—a look back at its history

It all started in 1971 when Herb Peterson, a McDonald’s franchisee in Santa Barbara, California, had a revolutionary idea: put an Eggs Benedict-inspired sandwich in the palm of your hand. That idea became the now-iconic Egg McMuffin, which hit menus nationwide in 1975. Fast forward 50 years, and the Egg McMuffin remains a breakfast staple.

“When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald’s breakfast menu,” said David Peterson, Herb’s son and a current McDonald’s Owner and Operator. “It’s been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans.”

“At McDonald’s, breakfast isn’t just a meal; it’s a cherished tradition and cornerstone of our brand,” said McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger in an official press release. “Our fans know they can always count on us for a one-of-a-kind breakfast experience, anchored in great value and high-quality ingredients.”

More McDonald’s breakfast deals coming in March

The fun doesn’t stop after March 2. McDonald’s is keeping the celebration going with more breakfast deals throughout March. From March 3 to March 30, fans can enjoy a buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) Sausage McMuffin with Egg when ordering McDelivery through the McDonald’s app (remember to opt into Rewards).

McDonald’s isn’t stopping at these deals, breakfast lovers can expect more promotions, celebrations and surprises throughout the year. “The truth is there’s a reason why McDonald’s breakfast hits different – everything on our menu is for the fans,” McDonald’s shared. “We’ll be celebrating breakfast all year long with a national campaign, so make sure you tune in. And don’t forget to set those alarms, because at McDonald’s, Breakfast Comes First!”

Here’s some more good news for McDonald’s breakfast lovers: its fan-favorite bagel sandwiches are officially available nationwide for the first time ever! Whether you prefer the Bacon, Egg & Cheese or the Steak, Egg & Cheese, you can now get your hands on these toasted, melty sandwiches at McDonald’s locations across the U.S.

New Yorkers can now grab a Krispy Kreme treat alongside their McCafé coffee, joining cities like Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Louisville. By the end of 2026, McDonald’s plans to have Krispy Kreme doughnuts available nationwide.
