You flip over a bag of coffee and spot a seal you don’t quite recognize. It says Regenerative Organic Certified, and it’s sitting right next to the USDA Organic logo you’ve trusted for years.

So which one matters more? And is the new label worth paying attention to, or is it just one more badge on an already crowded package?

It’s a fair question, especially now that the regenerative organic seal has jumped from niche brands to big-box stores. You’ll find it on everything from rice and eggs to vodka and dates.

The good news is that the label isn’t as complicated as it looks. Once you know what it builds on and what it adds, it’s much easier to decide whether it deserves a spot in your cart.

What is Regenerative Organic Certified?

Regenerative Organic Certified, or ROC, is a food and farming label that builds on organic standards. It starts with USDA Certified Organic as a baseline and then adds requirements of its own, according to the Regenerative Organic Alliance.

That means every ROC farm has to qualify as organic first.

What does USDA Organic require?

USDA Organic sets the foundation. Under the USDA’s organic rules, farms can’t use genetically modified organisms, sewage sludge or irradiation, and most synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are prohibited.

Organic livestock must eat organic feed and can’t be given antibiotics or added growth hormones. Animals also need outdoor access, and ruminants like cattle must meet extra pasture requirements.

How is regenerative organic different from USDA Organic?

ROC adds three layers that organic doesn’t fully address: soil health, animal welfare and fair treatment of farmers and workers. Think of USDA Organic as the floor and ROC as an extra story built on top of it.

What are the three pillars of regenerative agriculture?

The ROC framework is built around soil health, animal welfare and social fairness.

  • Soil health relies on regenerative farming methods like cover crops, crop rotation, composting, reduced tillage and rotational grazing. The aim is richer soil, more biodiversity and land that holds more water and carbon.
  • Animal welfare goes past organic feed and outdoor access with standards for pasture, shelter, transport and natural behaviors.
  • Social fairness covers fair pay, safe workplaces, freedom of association and protection from forced labor.

Does ROC replace USDA Organic?

No. It’s meant to raise the bar, not swap out organic.

“[ROC] is not intended to replace USDA Organic but to set a new standard for what’s possible in our food and farming systems,” Elizabeth Whitlow, former executive director of the Regenerative Organic Alliance, told Organic Produce Network.

Is Regenerative Organic Certified better than organic?

It’s stricter in three specific areas. Organic tells you how food was grown, while ROC also looks at the impact that farming had on the land, the animals and the workers involved. Because it includes all organic rules, it’s best seen as an upgrade rather than a rival.

How big is the Regenerative Organic Certified program?

Bigger than you might expect for a label that only launched in 2020. As of 2026, the program spans more than 20 million acres, 530 certified farms and ranches, 61,000 smallholder farmers, 350 licensed brands and 45 countries, according to the Regenerative Organic Alliance.

Yes. The SPINS Sustainability Signals report found ROC product sales climbed 21% from the previous year, and the number of shoppers buying them grew 30%.

Brittany Moore, product intelligence program manager at SPINS, says those shoppers are looking for something they can trust. “More sustainable and animal-friendly production practices inspire trust in the shopper that the products will be better for the planet, for their health, and the animals involved in the process,” she told FoodNavigator.

Where can you buy ROC products?

Probably at a store near you. Whole Foods reports approving 464 certified regenerative products by the end of 2025, close to three times as many as it carried in 2023. Sprouts, Target, Walmart and other national chains stock ROC items, too.

What kinds of foods have the ROC label?

The label started out on pantry staples like rice, coffee and eggs, but it’s quickly branching out.

Anytime Farmhouse, which makes its vodka, gin and canned cocktails with ROC-certified wheat, expanded into Whole Foods locations in more states in September 2026, BevNet reported. Oasis Dates followed a month later with a nationwide brand launch at Kroger and Sam’s Club. The company says in a press release that it operates the world’s first ROC date farm.

Should you choose regenerative organic over organic?

If organic already matters to you, ROC is worth a look. It gives you everything the organic seal does, plus more insight into how the soil, animals and workers behind your food were treated.
