When the holidays roll around, there’s one dessert I can never resist: saltine cracker toffee, affectionately nicknamed “Christmas Crack.” If you’ve never tried it, let me tell you—you’ll become addicted, too. This no-fuss treat comes together in just 10 minutes, uses only four simple ingredients and delivers a flavor punch that’ll have everyone asking for the recipe. It’s not just delicious, it’s endlessly customizable, lasts for weeks and makes the perfect gift. This easy recipe should be on your holiday baking list, so let’s make it.

What makes saltine cracker toffee so special?

In my opinion, saltine cracker toffee beats out all other bark variations out there—and for good reason. First, there’s the simplicity. With just saltine crackers, butter, brown sugar and chocolate chips, you can whip up a batch without even breaking a sweat. The magic happens when the butter and sugar melt into a toffee-like layer, soaking into the crackers before being topped with melted chocolate.

So, what do you get? A crackly, sweet-and-salty dessert that’s as satisfying as it is addictive. Think of it almost like a mashup between a chocolate-covered pretzel and toffee candy. This treat delivers—whether you made it simply to snack on or for a dessert charcuterie board. Plus, the fact that it can be made ahead of time is a lifesaver during busy holiday weeks.

Technically, this dessert doesn’t need a watchful eye over the recipe. But to make sure your Christmas Crack comes out just right, here are my tips for success (as someone who’s made this too many times to count).

Manage your salt levels

Most recipes call for salted butter, and that’s what I prefer. Since this recipe uses Saltine crackers, you can opt for unsalted butter to avoid a potential overload. Or, you can buy unsalted crackers and use salted butter—to each their own!

Get the toffee consistency just right

When melting the butter and brown sugar, let the mixture come to a boil and then simmer for three to four minutes. This allows it to thicken and develop that rich caramel flavor. Make sure to stir constantly to avoid burning and achieve that smooth texture.

Customize your toppings

Once the chocolate is spread over the toffee (right after baking so it melts quickly), it’s time for the fun part—decorating! Crushed candy canes, chopped nuts, mini marshmallows or festive sprinkles all add a unique touch. You can even drizzle white chocolate or caramel for extra flair.

I’ve used this recipe from On My Kid’s Plate for so long, I basically have it memorized. While almost three hours may look like a lot of time, trust me when I say the chilling time is worth it. But if you don’t want to wait that long, you can always enjoy it as soon as it hardens.

Ingredients:

  • Saltine crackers, salted (about 35 per pan)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter salted
  • 1½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Toppings (optional)

Directions:

  • Total Time: 2 hours, 49 minutes
  • Yield: 35 pieces
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a 10×15 rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with spray cooking oil or line with parchment paper. Lay crackers salted side down in a single, even layer covering the entire baking sheet.
  2. Place a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add brown sugar and butter and bring to a boil. Boil for three minutes while stirring continuously until the mixture is lighter in color and bubbling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla immediately.
  3. Pour toffee evenly over crackers, spreading as needed. Bake toffee crackers for five minutes, then remove from oven and turn oven off.
  4. Sprinkle chocolate chips over toffee layer and return to the warm oven for one minute. Remove and spread melted chips over the toffee in an even layer.
  5. Immediately sprinkle chopped nuts, sprinkles or any additional toppings you choose over the top of the chocolate. Then, let the toffee cool for 30 minutes on the counter before chilling in the refrigerator for two hours, or until completely cool and set.
  6. Cut or break into pieces before serving.

Storage and gifting tips

Getting to enjoy saltine cracker toffee for more than one night is the best part. Once it’s set and broken into pieces, store it in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge. This keeps it fresh for up to two weeks—though let’s be honest, it probably won’t last that long!

Do you want to be on everyone’s nice list? Skip the stress in the department store and gift this toffee instead. Package pieces in clear holiday-themed bags or small tins. It’s a thoughtful and budget-friendly way to spread some holiday cheer.
