What’s a yule log, and why is it a holiday tradition?
A yule log cake, or bûche de Noël, is a French dessert that symbolizes the burning yule log from centuries-old winter solstice rituals. The log was believed to bring good luck, warmth and prosperity to the household when burned in the hearth. Over time, the edible version, became a festive centerpiece designed to look like bark. The modern yule log is more about celebration than superstition, but it remains a quintessential holiday treat (like eggnog and figgy pudding) that brings a touch of history—and decadence—to any gathering.
Most yule log cakes feature a genoise sponge cake baked in a Swiss role pan. It can either be filled with whipped cream, jam, frosting or other fillings. Once rolled, the cake is iced with a chocolate buttercream, then decorated to look like the bark on a wooden log.
How to make the ultimate shortcut holiday yule log

Even with shortcuts, you can still make your holiday yule log look like it took hours. Or, at least, similar to the store-bought versions. Here are our tips for baking success:
Roll the cake while warm
Once the sponge cake comes out of the oven, roll it up in parchment paper while still warm to avoid cracks. We recommend waiting no more than ten minutes and using enough powdered sugar so nothing sticks to the towel. If the cake does crack, you can hide it later with frosting. Let the yule log cool in its rolled shape before frosting.
Choose your presentation
You can choose to slice off the ends of the log to show off the center, or frost it entirely. Some recipes go one step further by attaching the sliced ends to the side of the log to form a “branch” before frosting.
Use a serrated knife
For clean slices that show off the swirl, use a serrated knife and wipe it clean after each cut.
45-minute shortcut holiday yule log recipe

This recipe from MightyMrs.com couldn’t be easier to prep with store-bought chocolate cake mix and pre-made frostings. Use a 12 x 18-inch baking pan for best results.
Ingredients:
- 6 eggs
- 1 (13.25 oz.) box chocolate cake mix
- ⅓ cup water
- ¼ cup vegetable oil or canola
- 1 Tbs. powdered sugar
- 1 (12 oz.) can peppermint, vanilla or marshmallow frosting
- 1 (12 oz.) can whipped chocolate frosting
- Fresh cranberries and rosemary, for garnish
Directions:
- Total Time: 45 minutes
- Yield: 10 servings
- Preheat oven to 350ºF. Then, beat eggs in a large bowl for five minutes until frothy and pale yellow in color. Add the cake mix, water and oil and beat for two minutes.
- Line a baking pan with parchment paper or a silicon liner, then coat entirely (including sides) with baking spray. Then, pour the batter in and spread evenly.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool for at least five minutes.
- While the cake is still warm, grab a linen dish towel and sprinkle both sides with powdered sugar before covering the cake. Holding the towel and pan together, gently flip both so the cake drops onto the towel. Tap to release if needed.
- Peel the parchment paper or silicon liner off of the cake. Then tightly but gently roll the cake, keeping the towel in place to separate the layers. Place the rolled cake, seam-side down, on a cooling rack and let cool for at least 15 minutes.
- When cooled, gently unroll the cake and spread a layer of marshmallow frosting all the way to the edges. Roll cake back up to form a log, then place onto a serving dish, seam-side down.
- Frost the entire outside of the log with chocolate frosting. Decorate with desired toppings before serving.
