(Psst: Save time on prep by using those leftover mashed spuds from a holiday dinner.) Keep reading for pointers on making a yummy batch of air fryer potato balls.
What are potato balls made of?
Similar to croquettes, potato balls are made by combining mashed potatoes, seasonings, and other ingredients. The potato mixture is then formed into balls and fried on the stove or in the air fryer. Potato balls are tasty on their own or with various dipping sauces.
How do you keep potato balls from falling apart?
The key to ensuring the potato balls stay together, especially as you’re forming them, is adding flour to the mixture. Flour binds the ingredients so the balls retain their round shape. All you need is a couple tablespoons in order to ensure your crispy potato balls don’t fall apart during the cooking process. The best part is, you don’t need to let them chill once they’re formed–so you can cook and snack on them right away.
Leftover ingredient trick for faster prep
With the holidays in full swing, you’ll likely have some leftover mashed spuds from a festive dinner. So, you can use any leftovers to make air fryer potato balls. This not only prevents the side dish from going to waste but it allows you skip the process of boiling and mashing the potatoes.
An easy and mouthwatering air fryer potato balls recipe
This air fryer potato balls recipe comes from TikTok creator Becci Neumann and is a cinch to prepare. It uses seasonings like garlic powder, paprika, dried oregano and onion powder for an herby and pungent kick. Additionally, the recipe calls for nutritional yeast–which can be used to add a nutty and cheesy flavor to dishes. However, if you don’t have it on hand, substitute grated Parmesan cheese instead.
What’s also great about this recipe is that you don’t need to cover the potato balls in flour, egg or breadcrumbs. A light coating of oil does the trick for producing crunchy potato bites. Serve these potato balls with a side of ketchup, a creamy dipping sauce or a spicy and tangy dip like this homemade Bang Bang sauce. Giving regular spuds a nice life couldn’t be simpler!
