There are certain changes to our physical appearance that come about as we age. Though we may not exactly usher our wrinkles and gray hair in with open arms, they’re far from unexpected by the time they do arrive. One transformation you may not have been quite as mentally prepared for, however, is the thinning of your lips. Be they average or voluptuous, our puckers begin to shrink over time, with some showing a loss of volume as early as our late 20s or early 30s. Our favorite, surgery-free solution? Lip plumper, of course!
What is lip plumper?
A lip plumper is exactly what it sounds like — a product that gives your pout a fuller, more plumped-up appearance. Most last between one to four hours, with some even promising to improve the volume of your lips gradually over time.
That’s good news for those (read: most) of us watching our lips do a vanishing act as the years go by. “Young lips are full because young skin contains plenty of collagen and naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid, which keeps your lips moist and plump from the inside out,” California-based dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu, M.D., explained to Byrdie in 2019. “All of us tend to get thinner lips over time.”
How does lip plumper work?
According to plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer, M.D., who spoke to TODAY about the subject last year, “Topical lip plumpers work by holding onto moisture in the skin surface, which results in a localized swelling effect. This gives the lips a fuller and smoother appearance.”
These same effects can also be caused by mild irritants found within these products, such as capsicum (a type of pepper), cinnamon, or menthol, which cause blood to rush to the surface of your skin.
“Many of the ingredients purposefully cause a localized irritation … which increases blood flow and localized swelling, resulting in plumper appearance,” Shafer explained.
As for lip plumping devices, like Juvalips ($99.95, Amazon), a boosted pucker is formed with increased blood flow via a little help from this machine’s firm suction action.
The Best Lip Plumper
Whether you’re looking for a subtle puff or a Lisa Rinna-sized pout, these products will get you closer to your desired results better than than almost anything, sans for an injectable filler. A word of caution: Those with allergies or sensitive skin may want to pass or consult with a dermatologist before using products that may cause irritation. Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Plumping Gloss
Where to buy: $34, Sephora
Blending mildly irritating capsicum with spheres of lip-lifting hyaluronic acid, Dior’s Lip Maximizer, which comes in six high shine finishes or two shimmers, has been described as being “better than Botox.” Though users say it doesn’t deliver maximum volume instantly, over time, a noticeable difference can be perceived.
“It promises plump lips and it delivers!” wrote one fan, with another adding, “You have to keep using it every day … fast forward about a week and a half, and I'm really noticing a difference in the fullness of my lips.”
The formula is vegan-, cruelty-, and gluten-free, and it comes in recyclable packaging.
M3 Collagen Plumper
Where to buy: $22.41, Amazon
As Amazon’s No. 1 best-selling lip plumper, M3 Natural’s collagen lip plumper is one to contend with. It is chock-full of natural oils, such as peppermint and sweet almond, to stimulate circulation and kick off that “swelling” effect. But its secret weapon is Syn-Coll — a synthetic collagen-stimulating peptide that not only works to plump your pout, it's been proven to diminish fine lines and wrinkles on and around the lips in a brand-based study of volunteers over one month.
Assured one buyer: “After using it for a week, I do have to say my lips look fuller and feel softer. The collagen/peptides are super high quality. I have used lip plumpers in the past (they all take time to have long-lasting effects) and this one is all natural and competitive with the rest.”
PMD Kiss Lips Plumping Device
Where to buy: $99, Nordstrom
This innovative machine relies on pulsing, vacuum technology, which when used daily, is said to up your collagen production, and subsequently, the size of your lips. According to the brand’s website, a NewBeauty panel study conducted over the course of eight weeks found that 91 percent of participants saw an increase in lip volume, many of whom said the effect lasted for more than two hours; 75 percent also noticed a decrease in their lip lines and wrinkles.
To use this machine, apply a bit of the included lip serum to clean, dry lips, and let it dry for one minute. After turning the machine on, firmly press the device’s “plumping tip” onto the edge of your lips, allowing it to create a vacuum-tight seal. Use it for 10 to 20 seconds before moving onto the middle. Continue to move the device across your lips in six sections.
Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Pillow Plump XXL
Where to buy: $9.59 (Originally $11.99), Target
Don’t be fooled by this brand's drugstore pricing — this little gem packs a serious punch. Of all the lip plumpers I’ve personally tried, this one “stings” the most, but in a good way that makes me feel as though it’s doing it’s job. Using a proprietary natural plant oil infusion that acts as a “microcirculation-boosting extract” dubbed LIPSWELL, this gloss is formulated to give you ample fullness.
Explained one buyer: “Love this tingly gloss! … It really tingles when you put it on, lasts a while and has a plumping effect.”
Conair True Glow Light Therapy Lip Plumper
Where to buy: $64.82 (Originally $69.99), Amazon
Light therapy has many benefits for skincare, so it makes sense that Conair's True Glow light therapy device, which is inserted between your lips, works to treat fine lines around the area and boost collagen. Ultimately, that will equate to a set of amped-up lips. “LED light is essentially acting like the sun to a plant,” dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, M.D., told Vogue in 2016. “It is penetrating the skin to a cellular level and subsequently causing different intra- and intercellular reactions.”
Three minutes of use is recommended for maximum results, and consistency is key. This machine recharges via a USB and safety goggles are included.
Fusion Beauty LipFusion InFATuation
Where to buy: $20.30 (Originally $29), Dermstore
Fusion Beauty’s products are a staple in the lip plumping game that I’ve personally been using for years. While you won’t see a hugely drastic change in your appearance after swiping on this pink-hued gloss, you will notice a subtle, glossy boost as it works to increase the production of your fatty acids. You’ll also feel that all-too-familiar tingle. As an added bonus, it lends a brilliant swipe of highly-pigmented color.
Dr. Devgan Platinum Lip Plump
Where to buy: $50, Violet Grey
This plumper may be pricier than others on the market, but there’s good reason for that: It works — at least according to a clinical test results found on the brand’s website, in which 90 percent of users saw results. Developed by a certified plastic surgeon, Lara Devgan, M.D., this formula uses niacin (that's vitamin B3 in laymen's terms), to wake up blood vessels in the lips and increase size by 1 to 2 millimeters — a feat usually achieved with chili peppers, menthol, or cinnamon. With hyaluronic acid for added hydration, it also aims to diminish the perioral fine lines, aka rhytids, around your lips.
JuvaLips Automatic Natural Lip Plumper
Where to buy: $99.95, Amazon
Like the PMD Kiss, the JuvaLips device uses vacuuming technology to pull blood to the lips, improving their color and increasing their size. Unlike the PMD, however, it’s designed to evenly distribute suction across the lips for a set amount time (60 seconds). It also has a removable mouthpiece for hygiene. Results last for roughly four to 10 hours, according to the brand, and with consistent use, reviewers say it can produce long-lasting effects. Immediate results, however, can be seen in just one minute.
“Lips grew significantly within 60 seconds,” raved one buyer. “I could see and feel a difference a day later.”
Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Plumper
Where to buy: $29, Sephora
Capsicum pepper is behind the magnified look Too Faced’s Lip Injection extreme leaves behind. This mild irritant gets blood vessels around the mouth flowing, giving 93 percent of users in a consumer study “fuller and plumper” skin. This cruelty-free product has users gushing about its subtle-yet-sexy results, though some did issue a word of caution about getting it in other spots than intended areas. “Whenever i kiss my boyfriend it reacts with his skin and leaves red marks,” one woman advised. Duly noted!
Fillerina Lip Plump
Where to buy: $129, Skinstore
Fillerina is in a league all its own. For starters, it’s a science-backed product that pairs cosmetology with dermatology. This grade 2 gel, which is designed for those with fine age wrinkles, expression lines, or sagging in the cheekbones or lips, works by saturating lip skin with six different forms of hyaluronic acid in a molecular size that can easily penetrate the epidermis. To use it, you’ll apply 5 millimeters of the product up to five times a day for one month. According to the company, lips will be plumped with moisture for as long as three to four months.
La Mer The Lip Volumizer
Where to buy: $75, Sephora
Though La Mer is well-known for its moisturizer (Jennifer Lopez was once rumored to douse her entire body in the brand’s pricey cream!), its lip volumizer treatment, infused with the company’s own proprietary “miracle broth,” is every bit as luxe. Packed with hydrating antioxidants said to reduce the appearance of fine lines over time, it works to replace any hyaluronic acid you may be deficient in as it simultaneously plumps with minty methol.
“I love the cooling feel this leaves on the lips!” raved one Sephora shopper. “It makes my lips feel plumped and youthful.”
Flurona Cinnamon Essential Oil
Where to buy: $15.99, Amazon
You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a fuller-looking mouth in a hurry. Compounds in cinnamon essential oil cause a mild irritation when applied to the skin that will make them slightly inflamed and puffy — but in a good way. Try Florona’s 100 percent pure, USDA-certified organic blend for maximum results.
Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Gloss
Where to buy: $21, Sephora
Buxom must have gotten something right about its full-on plumping lip gloss — it’s got a whopping 12,000 reviews on Sephora alone! One mature user swears by the stuff, writing, “I am over 60 years old and my lips are thinner and getting lines. … At this point, [I’m] willing to pay anything that doesn't involve a needle. I purchased the plumper and I could feel the cooling tingle. To me, that means it is working. After two days, I could see an improvement. My lower lip was loosing color and thinning and it is correcting already. I will be a user until I can no longer take a breath.”
This one pairs a unique peptide complex with vitamins A and E for lift and hydration, and comes in three different finishes (metallic, shimmer, and high shine). It also has a wide-ranging span of colors that will suit your style — and mood!
