Living on the Upper East Side of New York City, we often stroll past Jonathan Adler’s boutique, gazing longingly at his quirky-chic home goods, but with a 10-year-old, budget is top of mind. So I was thrilled that Michaels is expanding its exclusive collaboration with the designer with the launch of the Jonathan Adler x Michaels Hanukkah Collection, which brings his signature playful aesthetic and modern design sensibility to the holiday at accessible prices starting at $7.99.
It feels perfect for making our mixed-heritage home feel like ours as we fold both of our design styles into one space. (And yes, I’m the kind of gal who wants her tree up yesterday, so the Star of David pieces already have pride of place in our home.)
The story behind the collection
Rooted in a classic blue-and-white palette, the collection puts a fresh spin on traditional Hanukkah motifs with sculptural shapes, graphic patterns and pops of gold.
For Adler, the palette was a natural starting point. “Blue and white have always been one of my favorite color combinations, and they feel especially at home during Hanukkah,” he said. “I wanted to take that timeless palette and give it a modern spin with all of the details that make your tablescape or mantel décor really shine.”
As someone just beginning to build a Hanukkah vocabulary of her own, I found that reassuring. The collection honors tradition but makes room for personality—which, in our household of three, feels like exactly the right balance.
“Hanukkah is about tradition, but your Hanukkah décor doesn’t have to be,” Adler adds. “I wanted the collection to be groovy and joyfully Jewish, and I think I nailed it if I do say so myself.” Amen to that!
I caught up with Adler to learn about his top picks and ask how a new multi-heritage family can start decorating from scratch.
Jonathan Adler’s five favorite pieces
Jonathan Adler x Michaels Menorah

The menorah is the heart of Hanukkah, and for anyone starting a new tradition, this one felt like the obvious anchor for our mantel.
“I love the menorah,” says Adler. “It’s made out of a solid chunk of acrylic; it’s both solid and floaty at the same time. It reflects light and the spirit of the season.”
Jonathan Adler x Michaels Ceramic Serving Plate

If latkes are the centerpiece of your Hanukkah table (and in our new household, I’m going to make sure they are), this platter is where they belong.
Adler’s attachment to it is personal: “My grandmother’s latkes are the thing I look forward to most every Hanukkah (RIP Granny Adler!), and I firmly believe a great recipe deserves a great platter. Serve in style: Grandma would want you to.”
Jonathan Adler x Michaels Acrylic Dreidels

With a daughter who’s 10, if there’s any ritual tailor-made to pull her in, it’s dreidel.
“Who doesn’t love a little friendly competition? Dreidel is one of those Hanukkah classics that brings everyone together, whether you’re teaching someone to play for the first time or defending your title as reigning champion,” says Adler. “These are perfect for gifting, made for gaming, and chic enough to leave out after the last spin.”
That last part matters when your apartment is small. Pieces that earn their keep on a shelf after the holiday wraps are the ones I’m reaching for.
Jonathan Adler x Michaels Star of David Napkin Rings

A small detail, but the kind that can make all the difference in leveling up your Hannukah celebration.
“You could toss your napkins on the table like a heathen, or you could use the Star of David Napkin Rings from my collection,” Adler says. “The choice is yours. I know what I’d do!”
Jonathan Adler x Michaels Gift Tags

Eight nights, eight gifts—these $8.99 gift tags make gift exchange easy.
Adler agrees: “Maybe you don’t want to hear it, but sometimes what’s on the outside DOES matter. Glam up any gift with these groovy tags.”
How to shop the collection
The Jonathan Adler x Michaels Hanukkah Collection launched on Friday, October 16 and is now live, with pieces starting at $7.99.
For our household, this first Hanukkah under one roof is less about getting every ritual exactly right and more about laying the groundwork—picking out the menorah together, teaching our daughter to spin a dreidel, letting Matt share the parts of the holiday that have always been his. Adler’s advice about honoring tradition and then making it your own is probably the best guidance a brand-new blended-faith family could get.
I’ll be lighting the first candle with my little family of three. The menorah is already on the mantel. And yes, these Star of David snack plates have pride of place, too.
