A new year is on the horizon, and that can only mean one thing: A new Pantone color of the year! The company announced its pick for 2020 yesterday, opting for a timeless shade that the company describes as a “poised and self-assured blue hue elegant in its simplicity”: classic blue. Read on to find out more about the color that will reign supreme for the next 365 days and how to incorporate it into your home.

What is the Pantone Color of the Year?

Pantone’s color of the year is a tradition spanning more than 20 years that sees the Pantone company analyzing current trends in the entertainment, travel, fashion, and home industries (to name a few) and selecting a single color based on their findings that embodies the spirit of the coming year to “provide strategic direction for the world.”

“The Pantone color of the year highlights the relationship between trends in color and what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time, a color that reflects what individuals feel they need that color can hope to answer,” Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute said in a press release. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions, designers and brands should feel inspired to use color to engage and connect.”

This year also saw Pantone adding a “multi-sensory” angle to its findings, working with leaders in sound, smell, taste, and feeling to create an accompanying sound, scent, and flavor for the trusty blue hue.

Unlike last year’s vibrant living coral hue, 2020’s color is a serene, comforting shade that Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, calls “evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky.”

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith,” she said. “It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by … classic blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” she said. “[It] encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”

It’s also color that’s particularly relevant on the home décor front, as its bold-yet-elegant vibrance works well across multiple materials, from fabric loveseats to painted hardwood tables. When incorporated into your décor via wall paint, furniture, or accent pieces, it also serves to provide a tranquil and comforting environment you’ll feel instantly at ease in.
