Major changes are coming to your local doctor’s office. On March 5, Amazon announced that it was launching Amazon Connect Health, an artificial intelligence (AI) solution that could change the way patients schedule appointments and more. Below, we share everything you need to know about this new tool, including where in the U.S. it will launch, why it could help you get more time with your doctor and if there are ways to bypass the AI bot and talk to a human instead.

What is Amazon Connect Health and how does it work?

Amazon Connect Health is an AI program dedicated to cutting down the amount of administrative work done by doctors and healthcare workers. The system generates bills and procedure codes, summarizes patients’ medical records, automates identity verification and transcribes doctor-patient conversations. It will also allow patients to schedule an appointment at any time throughout the day, as long as they are okay with talking to an AI bot instead of a real person.

“Amazon Connect Health is available around the clock, fluent in natural language and ready to book appointments instantly, without hold music or having to leave a voicemail and wait for it to be returned,” Colleen Aubrey, senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS) Applied AI Solutions, said in a press release. “Imagine a patient calls and says, ‘I want to see my doctor after work next week.’ Amazon Connect Health understands the reason for the call, the patient’s context and their preferences. It confirms who the patient is, checks their insurance, reviews patient and provider availability—and books the appointment while the patient is still on the line.”

Can you still talk to a real person if Amazon picks up?

According to the press release, “When a situation calls for a human touch—a medical concern, a complex request—it escalates seamlessly to staff. Health systems can customize exactly when and how that hand-off happens.”

At this time, it’s unclear what exactly qualifies as a situation needing a human touch. That said, if your call doesn’t qualify for an automatic transfer, or if you simply just want to talk to a real person instead, you can try saying  “connect me to a human.” Most AI bots are trained to recognize this and then connect you to a staff member at your doctor’s office during normal business hours. While we don’t yet know if Amazon Connect Health will follow this same type of prompt to connect to a real person, it’s certainly worth trying.

“Often the frustration patients feel when they hit an AI bot isn’t really about the AI itself, it’s about how it’s being deployed,” reveals Sabrina Mason, head of product and business operations at Override, a virtual care company focused on chronic pain management. “There’s a meaningful difference between AI that acts as a barrier to humans and AI that actually improves the path to solving a problem for the patient. That distinction matters a lot to patients.”

When is Amazon Connect Health coming to your state?

Currently, Amazon Connect Health is only available in Northern Virginia and Oregon, according to Amazon. The company did not share if or when it plans to expand the model into other states and/or countries.

What this could mean for booking your next doctor visit

“AI, when designed thoughtfully with a human-in-the-loop model, can actually reduce call wait times and improve access. Things like appointment booking, prescription refill management and after-hours support are areas where AI genuinely helps patients get a faster response,” Mason points out. “The problem is when it becomes a deflection tool rather than a care navigation tool. There should always be the option for human-in-the-loop support.”

As for the impact of Amazon Connect Health specifically, one early adopter has found it promising. Matthew Arnheiter, SVP Innovation at healthcare software company Netsmart, said in a statement that since using Amazon Connect Health, he’s seen a noticeable difference. “Providers are spending less time on administrative tasks and more time with patients,” he revealed.

The bottom line on Amazon Connect Health

Amazon Connect Health won’t replace your doctor—but it might make getting to them a whole lot easier. The AI handles the paperwork, scheduling and the phone tag so your care team can focus on what matters: you. It’s not everywhere yet, but it’s coming. And with the right know-how, you can still get that human touch.
