If you’ve ever wished you could do something meaningful for military veterans and animals in need, here’s some good news: You don’t need deep pockets or a wide-open schedule to make a real difference. Paws of War, an organization that connects rescued animals with veterans through lifesaving programs, has created several straightforward ways for anyone to pitch in. Whether you have a few spare hours, some supplies to share or room in your home for a furry guest, there’s a place for you.

One of the most direct ways to support Paws of War is by volunteering. The sign-up process is simple, and the organization offers a range of opportunities to match your skills and availability.

To get started, visit PawsOfWar.org and click “Get Involved,” then click “Volunteer.” From there, you complete an application and get matched with the right fit.

Volunteer roles cover a wide variety of needs. You can help at events, assist with animal care, support veterans directly or lend administrative help that keeps the organization’s programs running. Nonprofit organizations that serve both veterans and animals rely heavily on volunteer labor to sustain day-to-day operations, so for those who may not be in a position to donate money, volunteering offers a meaningful alternative.

Whether you have a few hours a month or can commit to something more regular, each contribution of time helps Paws of War continue connecting rescued animals with the veterans who need them.

If your schedule doesn’t allow for hands-on volunteering, donating supplies is another way to contribute. Paws of War makes the process simple through its website.

Go to the site and click “Ways to Give,” then click “In-Kind Donation” to find instructions for sending gift cards. You can also click “Amazon Wishlist” to give items that go directly to rescued animals and the veterans who rely on them.

That Amazon Wishlist option is particularly convenient if you want to know exactly what the organization needs most. Rather than guessing what might be useful, you can select specific items from a curated list, so your contribution addresses real, immediate needs. Every item donated, whether it’s food, supplies or a gift card, goes toward sustaining the animals in the program and supporting the veterans connected to them.

In-kind donations (items and gift cards rather than cash) are a practical form of giving that many people may not immediately consider. For those who prefer to give tangible goods rather than monetary contributions, this option provides a clear and direct path to helping.

Open your home as a foster family

For those with a bit more room in their lives and homes, fostering an animal through Paws of War is one of the most personal and rewarding ways to contribute.

On the Paws of War website, click “Adopt/Foster,” then click “Foster an Animal” to apply. The application process connects prospective foster families with animals that need temporary care.

Foster families provide temporary homes, love and stability while animals prepare for service work or permanent adoption in a forever home. This bridges the gap between rescue and placement. Animals in foster homes often receive individualized attention and socialization in a home environment, which can be difficult to replicate in a shelter or kennel setting. For animals being prepared for service work with veterans, that kind of stable, nurturing environment can be especially beneficial.

Fostering is also a wonderful option for families or individuals who may not be ready for the long-term commitment of full adoption but still want to make a difference in an animal’s life. It’s a temporary arrangement that benefits the animal, the organization and the veteran who will eventually be paired with that animal.

Every bit of support matters

Whether you choose to volunteer, donate supplies or foster an animal, each form of support helps keep Paws of War’s programs going. The organization has structured its opportunities so that community members at every level, regardless of budget, schedule or living situation, can find a way to contribute.

Both veterans and rescue animals face ongoing challenges and organizations like Paws of War depend on community support to sustain their work. Getting involved doesn’t require extraordinary effort—just a willingness to show up, give what you can or open your home when it matters most.
