Great Dane

Great Danes are one of the most recognizable dogs, with Scooby-Doo being perhaps the most famous Great Dane of all. Males can grow between 30 to 34 inches tall at their shoulders, and females can reach 28 to 32 inches. Great Danes are not hypoallergenic pets, but they are great with kids if you’re looking for a family dog. Fun fact: Did you know that Great Danes have German — not Danish — origins? Who would have known!
Great Pyrenees

If you don’t mind dog hair everywhere, getting a Great Pyrenees might work for you (luckily, we’ve rounded up the best vacuums for sucking up every pet hair). Males can grow to be between 27 to 32 inches tall at their shoulders, while females usually hover around 25 to 29 inches. Their weatherproof coats make them perfect outdoor dogs. These canines were bred to guard sheep in the mountains, so they are typically pretty independent.
Neapolitan Mastiff

According to the American Kennel Club, these moving folds of wrinkles are considered “not very active” dogs. So if you’re only looking for an occasional walking partner, this might be the breed for you. Males reach between 26 and 31 inches tall at their shoulders, while females peak between 24 and 29 inches.
If you have older kids and think a mastiff would be the perfect addition, we recommend buying ear plugs and a bib because these pooches are known for their drooling and loud snores.
Irish Wolfhound

Did you know the Irish wolfhound is the tallest of all tall dogs? Males are a minimum of 32 inches at their shoulders, while females are a minimum of 30 inches — talk about some big dogs! Keon, an Irish wolfhound, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest dog tail, which is 30 inches!

These fluffy dogs require a weekly brushing, so it’s time to stock up on lint rollers. Male Leonbergers stand between 28 and 31.5 inches at the shoulder while females stand between 25.5 and 29.5.

Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan mastiffs are a lot less wrinkly than the Neapolitans. Full-grown males can reach between 26 and 30 inches at the shoulder, while females are between 24 and 28 inches.
In 2014, a Chinese businessman spent $1.9 million on a Tibetan mastiff puppy. That’s some puppy love! The animal was reportedly 31 inches tall and weighed 200 (!) pounds.
The Caucasian Shepherd
Caucasian shepherd dogs were bred in Russia to be able to withstand the freezing cold temperatures. Males are between 28 to 30 inches at their shoulders, while females are 26 to 27.5 inches.
Because these pooches are natural guard dogs, it’s not recommended as a family dog. Caucasian shepherds are fierce protectors of their family, and they may accidentally bite guests or young children who come over to visit.
