98-Year-Old Mom Moves Into Nursing Home to Look After 80-Year-Old Son

Moving into a nursing home at 98 is not unusual, wouldn’t you agree? But moving into the nursing home to care for someone else is quite a special thing — especially when that person is your 80-year-old son.

A year after Tom Keating became a resident at the Moss View care home in Huyton, Liverpool, his dear mother, 98-year-old Ada, moved in too. And the woman says she has the sweetest, simplest reason for doing so: “You never stop being a mum.”

The mother and son, originally from Wavertree, are inseparable and love spending time together playing games or watching TV. They share a special relationship, as Tom never married and has always lived with Ada.

“I say goodnight to Tom in his room every night, and I’ll go and say good morning to him. I’ll tell him I’m coming down for breakfast. When I go out to the hairdresser’s, he’ll look for me to see when I’m coming back,” Ada told the Daily Mail.

Looking After Her Boy

For his part, Tom knows he’s in the best hands a person could ask for — his loving mother’s.

“I’m happy to see my mum more now she lives here. Sometimes she’ll say ‘behave yourself.’ She’s very good at looking after me,” said Tom.

Ada had four children total with her late husband: Tom, her oldest, and three girls, Barbara, Margi and Janet, who died at the age of 13. She’s a former auxiliary nurse — so comfort and caretaking is in her blood, it seems — while Tom is a former painter and decorator.

“There’s no parting them. It’s reassuring for us that they’re both getting looked after 24/7,” said Ada’s granddaughter, Debi Higham, who says that she and other family members are happy that Ada and Tom can be together again.

The staff at Moss View is, too.

“It’s very touching to see the close relationship both Tom and Ada share, and we are so pleased we were able to accommodate both of their needs,” said Philip Daniels, the home’s manager. ‘It’s very rare to see mothers and their children together in the same care home, and we certainly want to make their time together as special as possible. They are inseparable.”

An Unbreakable Bond

Sound like any mom-and-son duos you know? While we can’t say we’ve ever heard of a case like this before, there’s no denying it’s quite a sweet thing when a parent and child have a bond that truly lasts for a long lifetime. As we all know, raising a child is a lifelong job.

Ada summed up the heartwarming situation quite well.

“When I get back he’ll come to me with his arms outstretched and give me a big hug. You never stop being a mum.”
