Ready to decorate on a budget? Here are some creative, cost-effective ways to make your home Halloween-ready while staying wallet-friendly. Get your crafting supplies ready—it’s time to make some magic!

Make a gourd-geous centerpiece with a pumpkin

“Nothing says Halloween like a pumpkin, and its shape makes a perfect vase!” says Kate Rodgers, owner of Southern Home and Hospitality. Keep it classic with a bouquet of dark flowers, or get creative by adding fun touches. “Cut some scraggly bare branches from the yard for an eerie yet elegant look.” Just cut a hole in the top big enough to fit an old jelly jar. Fill the jar with water for flowers, then arrange your designs.

Conjure ghosts with a clothesline trick

Create floating ghosts by tying off a balloon “head” inside white garbage bags, then clip them on a washing line. “The breeze brings them to life,” says Rodgers. “And when Halloween is over, they can become ‘trash’ themselves with no need for storage!” (This also works with white sheets!)

Tell a tale of terror with a magical library

“Make over a stack of books into tomes that look like they belong in a wizard’s library,” says Rodgers. Search the internet for “free printable Halloween book covers,” then simply print your favorites and trim them to fit a few hardcover books.

Create some magic with Mason jars

It’s easy to transform ordinary Mason jars into spooky-cute decor. Just coil orange string lights and place them inside the jar for a spectral glow, then fill with the (faux!) creepy crawlies of your choice, like plastic spiders. Recruit the little goblins in your life to decorate the outside with cat or ghost cutouts and, finally, pull apart a cotton ball to wrap your jar in the perfect “mist.”

Decorate your lawn with a cardboard graveyard

Transform cardboard boxes into gravestones by cutting them into classic tombstone shapes. Then unleash your creativity. “Tombstone epitaphs have so much potential beyond the expected ‘RIP.’ Have fun with names like Barry M. Deep, Al B. Back or Izzy Dead,” suggests Rodgers. (Just bring inside when rain is forecast!)

Add eerie candlelight with toilet paper rolls

Looking for another way to get crafty? Empty toilet paper rolls can become spooky candleholders! Paint the rolls black and glue faux candles to the top. For a melting-wax effect, add glue drips running down the sides, then finish with battery-operated tea lights. “These are a great addition to indoor tablescapes or outdoor haunted displays,” says Rodgers.

Craft creepy creatures with egg cartons

Turn your recycling bin into a craft treasure trove by transforming egg cartons into spooky critters. Cut individual cups from the carton, paint them black, and attach googly eyes or fangs. Glue on pipe cleaners to make spider legs or bat wings. These easy DIY creatures are perfect for decorating your windowsills or scattering throughout your yard!
