Stanley Mug Recall: Popular Tumblers Pose Burn Hazard—Is Yours Affected?
Stanley recalls 2 million tumblers due to burn risks—here’s how to check your mug and stay safe
While Stanley has been feeling festive and promoting holiday-themed cups and other products, fans of the beloved tumbler brand may want to avoid the mugs for now. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a Stanley mug recall due to a burn hazard. Keep reading to learn more about the affected products and how to protect yourself.
Which Stanley products have been recalled?
Stanley 1913 recalled more than two million Switchback and Trigger Action mugs alongside the CPSC. The company reported having issues with the lids, noting that “the lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard.”
The stainless-steel travel mugs were available in various colors, including white, black and green, and were sold in 12, 16 and 20-oz capacities. The product identification numbers are as follows:
- Switchback 12 ounces: 20-01437
- Switchback 16 ounces: 20-01436, 20-02211
- Trigger Action 12 ounces: 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
- Trigger Action 16 ounces: 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
- Trigger Action 20 ounces: 20-02034, 20-02746
All affected mugs were sold from June 2016 through December 2024 in-store and online at Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and Walmart. You can check whether or not your mug is part of the recall by checking the verification number on the bottom and seeing if it matches any of the numbers listed.
What should you do if your mug is affected?
The recall was declared after Stanley received statements of lids detaching from cups. Stanley received 91 reports in total, with 38 burn injuries worldwide. Sixteen of the reports and two of the injuries came from U.S. customers. Of the people hurt, 11 required medical attention.
Consumers should stop using these mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid. Why Stanley mugs are so popular
While the Stanley brand has existed for over 100 years, the tumbler craze took off thanks to platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The company is known for its durable cups, especially the Quencher, available in various sizes and colors.
Stanley has also been a hot commodity recently due to its exclusive collaborations with movies such as Wicked and Barbie and celebrities such as Olivia Rodrigo. Anytime Stanley announces a new collection or design, the cups are typically sold out on the same day. The latest addition to the Stanley family is the Scarlet Tinsel Tumbler, which arrived right before the holidays.
