After much of the United States was impacted by the recent snowstorm that’s been named Winter Storm Fern, many folks are spending their Monday morning shoveling, plowing and hoping for the snow to melt. But with over a foot of snow in certain areas (more in others) and plenty of ice everywhere, daily activities like deliveries from the United States Postal Service (USPS) will be delayed.

Despite the motto that begins, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night” often being associated with the USPS, snowfall like this past weekend’s will certainly cut into your regular mail and package delivery.

Due to the winter weather sweeping across most of the nation this weekend into next week, the Postal Service anticipates transportation and delivery impacts in many regions,” the USPS said in a statement prior to the storm. “These conditions include heavy snow and blizzard conditions, damaging ice, record low temperatures, high winds and long duration power outages.”

There was also an update shared to the USPS Facebook page, informing folks they may not be receiving regular mail on Monday.

The post reads, “Severe winter weather in many parts of the U.S. may impact the processing, transportation, and delivery of mail and packages.” Check for the latest service updates here: https://b.link/usps-service-alerts

A few former and current USPS drivers chimed in with comments on the post. One former mail carrier wrote, “I was always told we had to make an ATTEMPT to deliver. You use your own judgment. Don’t put yourself in danger on the ice.”

Concerned citizens also shared their thoughts, with one writing, “Hopefully the USPS will not have any carriers, rural or city, out in this weather. If there are warnings about keeping your pets in, then carriers or drivers shouldn’t be out! Let them all stay home!”

Much of the United States was impacted by Fern and if you live in any of the snow-covered towns and cities—particularly in the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast regions of the U.S. or the Southwest, Southern Plains, Midwest, Ohio Valley and Southeast regions of the country—you can most certainly expect delays.

The service alert shared a list of states and areas of the United States that will be impacted by the winter storm. The specific states included  are as follows: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, District of Columbia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

USPS deliveries will likely continue on Tuesday, as long as the weather cooperates. While residents are encouraged to stay indoors and off the roads until they are cleared, the same goes for the postal workers. Stay safe and warm and remember to be patient when it comes to the USPS!
