If you consider yourself a collector or curator of quirky and eccentric home goods, you’ve likely heard of MacKenzie-Childs. From their checkered prints full of personality or whimsical florals, the brand is built on one-of-a-kind kitchenware, furniture and home decor. MacKenzie-Childs was founded by Richard MacKenzie-Childs and his wife, Victoria MacKenzie-Childs, and their vision lives on even after Victoria’s sad passing on March 4 at 77 years old.

Here, read all about their iconic brand, Victoria’s legacy, most popular items and affordable alternatives that boast the same style and aesthetic for less.

Why the MacKenzie-Childs brand is iconic

Whether it’s the classic MacKenzie-Childs black and white Courtly Check pattern that’s always caught your eye, the stunning teapot in their lineup calling your name as a centerpiece on your stove or even their charming salt and pepper shakers, the brand offers something for all tastes.

Launched in 1983, Richard and Victoria began their empire by doing what they loved: creating art. Though they sold the company after financial hardships in 2001, the couple continued making art, and even rose to fame for living aboard an Ellis Island Ferry that doubled as their studio.

Victoria’s death came as a shock to close friends and family, but her brother revealed to People that she had been navigating some health issues for the last year. In spite of this, her close friend, Veronica Lanni, shared that she was still in a great place prior to her passing. “It was very difficult to see her pass because she was so full of life,” she shared. “When someone’s really sick, and they’re not eating, they can’t get out of bed, you’re kind of prepared for it…With Victoria, that did not happen. She was amazing the night before.”

MacKenzie-Childs is known best for their checkered kitchenware—from tea kettles to plates, mugs and glasses, it’s hard to peruse their site and not fall in love. But when the Courtly Check Tea Kettle costs $170, a set of four Royal Check dinner plates costs $290 and one Rosy Check Porcelain Mug costs $50, folks have been seeking out dupes and alternatives that share a similar style but a less daunting price tag.

Where to find MacKenzie-Childs dupes

One Instagram user, @dollartreedollie, shared a video showcasing plates for $1.50 at her local Dollar Tree with blue and pink checker patterns that resemble MacKenzie-Childs. Other TikTok users have revealed that at their local Home Goods, they’ve also found products that have the signature MacKenzie-Childs charm.

Whether you’re just starting to build your collection or looking to add a few special touches to your kitchen, these budget-friendly finds prove that beautiful, joyful home décor is within reach for everyone. Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs built their brand on the belief that art and beauty should be part of everyday life—and thanks to these wonderful alternatives, you can bring that same spirit of creativity and whimsy into your home, no matter your budget.
