As the cost of everyday items continues to rise, millions of Americans are searching for ways to help them afford the products that they need. And many are turning to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or  food stamps, a government-funded program that gives grocery money to Americans who need it. But what stores can SNAP benefits be used at? And are there any prerequisites to qualify for the program? We break it all down below.

What is SNAP?

SNAP is a government-funded program that gives Americans a set amount of funds each month, delivered via an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. It’s run by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and currently roughly 41 million Americans, about 12 percent of the population, are on the program.

To qualify for SNAP, one must have a gross monthly income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line, meaning they make $1,729 or less a month, and have less than $3,000 in assets.

“SNAP is a means-tested program, which means eligibility depends on gross and net household income. Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor benefits are usually included in income,” Chris Wu, a finance expert who specializes in helping families navigate government-assistance programs, explains. “SNAP also takes allowable deductions into account, which can make a significant difference in whether you’re eligible. Seniors can deduct out-of-pocket medical costs above a certain threshold, housing expenses and utility bills. Making these deductions can decrease net income figures and increase the chances of qualifying.”

Recently, DoorDash teamed up with Family Dollar, with Mike Goldblatt, VP of enterprise partnerships at DoorDash, saying in a statement, “We’re proud to partner with Family Dollar to help more customers put food on the table. Our recent research shows SNAP users on DoorDash are twice as likely to live in food deserts than non-SNAP users, underscoring the role on-demand grocery delivery can play in bridging geographic barriers to food access. With SNAP/EBT now available at Family Dollar on DoorDash, more families can access the essentials they need at everyday low prices.”

Chris Hooks, president and chief commercial officer at Family Dollar, added to that, saying, “At Family Dollar, we’re focused on making it easier for customers to access the value they count on every day. Our partnership with DoorDash to enable SNAP/EBT payments nationwide is an important step in removing barriers for our customers and expands how and where we serve them, bringing greater flexibility, convenience and speed to the shopping experience. It’s another step forward in how we continue to evolve to meet the needs of today’s customer.”
