‘They’re a Representation of Love’: Woman Crochets Cute Dolls, Raising Thousands for Charity
Maria Castañeda turns her grandmother’s beloved craft into a heartwarming force for good
Key Takeaways
- Maria Castañeda learned crochet to honor her grandmother and give back to others.
- Her handmade doll project, "Maria's Extraordinary People," raised over $12,000.
- Every custom creation benefits charities, supporting grieving kids and underrepresented groups.
Her grandmother’s love of crochet inspired Maria Guadalupe Castañeda to pick up the craft. Now, her handmade dolls bring comfort and raise thousands of dollars for charities close to her heart. Here, she shares her story with Woman’s World.
“Just a little more and it will be complete!” Maria Guadalupe Castañeda’s grandmother said as Maria sat watching her crochet hook move with ease.
Ever since she was a child, Maria remembered her grandmother crocheting, but she didn’t take up the hobby until she was teaching adult continuing education classes, and a student offered to teach her.
I love this, Maria thought after slowly getting better and better. I’m going to challenge myself to crochet even more things—maybe a doll!
Before long she got so good, she was asked to make adorable crocheted dolls for a program at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, where students learned about important historical figures. Maria loved the idea of bringing those figures to life as crocheted dolls the children could interact with.
When one of the teachers asked Maria to make a historical doll for her, Maria was happy to help. But rather than accept payment, she suggested, “Why not make a donation to your favorite cause instead?”

Turning Handmade Crocheted Dolls Into Thousands in Charity Donations
Not long after, Maria shared a photo of a doll on her Instagram page. Her feed lit up with compliments and commission requests. A co-worker suggested, “Why don’t you start your own page and call it Maria’s Extraordinary People?”
Maria jumped at the chance to raise even more money through her social media page (@Marias_Extraordinary_People).
Now, with each doll commission, she asks the recipient to donate to a specific charity.
After a recent fundraising effort for The Children’s Room, a nonprofit that supports children grieving the loss of a loved one, Maria was invited to the organization’s annual gala. There, organizers encouraged attendees to apply to run the Boston Marathon and raise money for the nonprofit. Maria submitted her application and was accepted soon after.

The Children’s Room offered runners several ideas for reaching their fundraising goals, including using their talents to help raise money. Well, I know how to crochet, Maria thought.
By the time she laced up her running shoes, she had already raised more than $12,000.
Her Grandmother’s Craft Inspired a Mission of Hope
Along with creating dolls for charity — Maria donates her creations to various nonprofits that auction them at their fundraising events. Maria is particularly passionate about bringing attention to underrepresented groups and has used her crocheting to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people in wheelchairs and those with Down syndrome.
Maria receives messages about how her creations have made a difference in the lives of recipients, too. One woman received crocheted dolls representing herself, her mother and her brother. She told Maria, “Now I can treasure the three of us together — no matter what.”

“It feels good to have someone to hold at night,” another recipient said.
Maria won’t be putting away her crochet hook anytime soon. As long as she receives requests that turn into donations, she’ll continue creating a chain of goodwill by making dolls.
“I really care about humanity, and the dolls are a physical representation of love,” Maria says. “For me, the most beautiful part is knowing that I created something that makes a difference.”
