After Hearing a Divine Message, One Woman Took Action and Changed a Life Forever—Her Story
A voice told her to act—and her decision saved a life. Read Joanne Groshardt's incredible story
One day, I went with a fellow volunteer to a St. Vincent de Paul home visit, and the apartment we went to had no furniture. The dad, Sam, was in his 50s. He and his wife had three young children. They asked our charity to help with one month’s rent because the dad missed a few weeks of work.
Sam explained that he’d had a heart attack two weeks prior at his job. An ambulance had taken him to a local hospital. He said the doctor was waiting for a bed to open up at Parkland, a county hospital for people with no insurance.
With bills to pay, he went back to work while he waited, and called us.
The following Monday, I was watching television when something in my head kept telling me to go to the Parkland hospital. I kept saying to the voice, “No. I didn’t get much sleep last night. It’s far away. It’s too hot. I don’t want to go.”
The voice continued, “Go to Parkland.” I kept saying, “No.”

This went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, I agreed to go to the hospital.
I went to the service desk and explained that I volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul and shared Sam’s story.
The volunteer looked up his information and told me he had an appointment the next day with a cardiologist. Such incredible timing for me to come to the hospital.
I was at Sam’s workplace an hour later, and he was lifting heavy boxes and panting. I told him I’d pick him up the next day at 6 am. His boss objected to him missing work and Sam likely wouldn’t have gone. But I told the boss that unless he wanted a dying man on his floor, Sam was going with me to Parkland the next day.
Sam ended up having quadruple heart surgery. It was a success. He called me his angel and gave me an angel pin. It reminds me of the angel’s voice that told me to go!
