64-year-old heart transplant patient saved by NYSP troopers

Nearly stranded in severe winter weather on NY State Route 5 on the way to her heart transplant surgery in Cleveland, OH, a 64-year-old woman is saved by NYSP troopers.
The woman, who relies on a battery-powered heart pump, was traveling from Rochester, NY to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio with her husband for her procedure.
Due to the severity of the snowstorm near Portland, it was unlikely that the couple would be able to navigate the road conditions quickly enough to make her surgery safely.
“Before the situation became critical, the husband made contact with a nurse from Cleveland Clinic,” the statement from the NYSP reads. “That nurse was able to contact the state police, and troopers were able to maintain continuous contact and locate them with a NYSP Utility Task Vehicle.”
From the point of interception, the couple was then transported by state troopers to the Portland Fire Department. Then they were transferred to the Westfield Memorial Hospital and later to Jamestown Airport, where the woman was delivered safely to Cleveland Clinic for surgery by plane.
The life-saving teamwork by the state troopers, medical staff and transportation teams highlights how essential it is for each task force to work together to serve their communities.
“It’s heartening to see such dedication to ensuring a patient received a life-saving heart transplant despite the challenges posed by the snowstorm,” Trooper James O’Callaghan, Troop A Public Information Officer, told WKBW News.

After the successful rescue mission, the NYSP shared the heartwarming story on their Facebook page.
In the comment section of the post, a woman claiming to be the heart transplant patient’s daughter thanked the troopers for ensuring her mother’s safety—and likely saving her life.
“Words will never express the extreme gratitude my family and I have for you,” the daughter wrote. “That’s my mom you saved!”
