Chubbs the 29-Pound Stray Cat Is a Bread-Loaf-Shaped Lump of Love
Chubbs the 29-pound cat was found wandering the streets of California. Now, the hefty, furry loaf is in need of a new home (although he already had one in our hearts!).
“As millions of Americans hit the gym on the quest for the perfect summer body, a 29-lb. cat began an exercise regimen of his own,” the Pasadena Humane Society wrote on Facebook along with a photo of blue-eyed Chubbs. “Earlier this week, the 10-year-old Himalayan mix took himself for an afternoon walk down a busy Altadena Street. Luckily, he was found by a good Samaritan who lugged him to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA for care.”
Chubbs, as he’s been dubbed by his new carers, showed up with large, painful patches of matted fur on his back. It took the shelter a few hours to get him clean. Since then, Chubbs has started living in the office because he’s too big to sit comfortably in a kennel. “He has a sweet disposition, but his heavy load makes it uncomfortable to move around freely,” the Humane Society wrote.
After Chubbs’ photo went viral, several people stepped forward saying Chubbs was theirs. However, Chubbs has no microchip, so the Humane Society wrote on Facebook that they were delaying his adoption to properly vet all the claims.
Although Chubbs is a whole lot of cat to love, he’s an example of the trend of overweight animals. In America, most cats and dogs are now obese, according to a new survey from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). “We need to get some weight off of [Chubbs], and whoever adopts him is hopefully going to have a little bit of fun exercising him,” Pasadena Humane Society president Julie Banks told KTLA. “A fat cat might be really cute, but they can get the same diseases that we can. They can get diabetes, they can have heart disease, thyroid disease.”
