Did your pup make the cut?

We all like to think our pets are the most unique, adorable, and precious animals to ever walk on the earth — but have you ever wondered just how popular your dog’s breed really is?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) just released 2020’s top dog breeds, based on stats from 2019. Take a look to learn more about each type of pup and see if your pooch takes one of the top ranks!

These pooches are “famously friendly,” according to the AKC, and make for lovable additions to any household (including getting along well with any other pets). They enjoy getting in plenty of exercise, so plan to take them on runs, swimming trips, or wear your arm out playing endless games of fetch. They’ve also kept this top spot for the past 29 years!

2. German Shepherd

These smart dogs are exceptionally good at learning commands and training, one of the many reasons you often see them as K-9 partners for military and law enforcement. Their gentleness and loyalty also make them great family pets.

3. Golden Retriever

The blonde variety of retrievers are just as friendly and energetic as their cousins in the top spot. The AKC also claims that despite their life-long puppy-like behavior, the breed takes well to training. This makes them great seeing-eye or search-and-rescue dogs as well as family pups.

4. French Bulldog

The AKC describes these li’l charmers as adaptable, playful, and smart. They don’t require a lot of outdoor exercise, which makes them and their delightfully perky ears perfect city-dwellers.

5. Bulldog

A bit bigger than their French cousins, these pouty-faced pouches are known to be super friendly, courageous, and calm. Don’t assume the easygoing pooches are lazy, though — the love a brisk walk as much as the next pup.

6. Poodle

The AKC didn’t specify between regular, miniature, toy poodles, or mixes, but all of the curly-haired cuties can be described as active, proud, and “wickedly smart.” They’ll keep you on your toes!

7. Beagle

These friendly, curious, loyal, loving, and “merry” pups have long been a favorite addition to families who just can’t say no to their sweet faces — even when they’re getting themselves into trouble.

8. Rottweiler

This breed can get a bad reputation, but the AKC says a properly-raised Rottie will be calm, confident, and courageous — and “not unduly aggressive.” They also have a tendency to believe they’re lovable little lapdogs no matter how big they get.

9. German Shorthaired Pointer

These freckled pooches are friendly, smart, and “bond firmly to their family,” the AKC claims. They have boundless energy and love running and swimming.

10. Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Queen’s favorite breed is known for being affectionate, smart, and alert. They also describe these pups as “big dog[s] in a small package” and “surprisingly agile” despite their petite legs. This is the first time ever these compact cuties have broken into the top 10 rank!
