As we get older, many of us struggle with hair loss. Hair falls out for different reasons, and after menopause, our bodies produce less estrogen and tend to lack vital nutrients that keep our manes healthy and strong. Luckily, you can fight these effects and stimulate new hair growth with two ingredients you already have in your kitchen — coconut oil and cinnamon.

We’ve long heard about the many benefits of coconut oil, from aiding fat loss to soothing a sunburn. The fatty acids in coconut oil make it a great ingredient for DIY beauty treatments, as they form a protective barrier that locks in moisture. Dry, damaged strands benefit from the moisturizing properties of coconut oil, as does the scalp. Using coconut oil directly on hair gives it a smooth feeling and super shiny look!

And while you may not be so familiar with cinnamon for hair growth, cinnamon has stimulating properties that can help. When applied to the scalp, cinnamon increases circulation to the hair follicles and encourages the growth of new strands. What’s more, cinnamon is also a potent antimicrobial. This means that it can prevent buildup on the scalp from common problems that cause hair loss like dandruff and fungal infections.

Making a cinnamon and coconut oil hair mask is super simple, and there are a few ways to do it. I like to use cinnamon essential oil, but you can also use ground cinnamon if that’s all you have. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Melt and warm 2 oz. coconut oil in your microwave or in a small saucepan over the stove.
  2. Mix warmed coconut oil with 3 to 5 drops cinnamon essential oil OR ¼ tablespoon ground cinnamon. Do a test patch on your skin to make sure there are no adverse reactions.
  3. Beginning with your scalp, apply the oil all over your head and through your hair from root to tip. Saturate your scalp and ends the most.
  4. Leave the mask on for 15 to 30 mins, then wash as usual.

That’s it! You can use this hair mask twice per week for best results. We’re sure that you’ll be enjoying longer, stronger locks in no time. And if you’re really looking to take better care of your mane, follow these other tips and tricks to stop hair loss for good.
