How to Get Rid of Frizzy Hair So It’s Always Smooth and Shiny

Tags:

Trying to tame frizz can be tricky, especially when you’re short on time. It can feel like the more you brush or style your hair, the frizzier your strands become. Learning how to get rid of frizzy hair might seem impossible, but we promise it’s not!

We spoke to a few hairstylists who shared their best frizz control tricks to help you regain your hair’s beautiful smooth texture and shininess in minutes.

What causes frizzy hair?

Getting to the root of the cause (quite literally) can help you understand how to get rid of frizz. Hairstylist Nick Arrojo shares with Woman’s World one of the key reasons strands refuse to stay smooth. “When your hair gets frizzy, often times it’s because it is already extremely dry, so then your hair tries looking for added moisture in the atmosphere,” he explains. “If your hair has enough moisture in it to begin with, then it won’t swell up looking for extra moisture from the environment you’re in.”

LA-based hairstylist Matilde Campos tells us that age is another common factor. “When hair begins to become gray, it is due to the reduction of melanocytes — melanocytes are what gives your hair color,” she says. “The reduction of melanocytes removes the smoothness and moisture from your hair, causing dryness.”

She adds that this change in the hair’s texture and hydration is a major culprit for frizz, so it’s important to choose the right anti-frizz products (more on that later!). Research published in the International Journal of Trichology highlights other factors such as brushing habits and harsh chemical treatments causing hair breakage, which can lead to frizz.

Essentially, it might be hard to pinpoint just one cause. However, there’s plenty of simple ways to nix frizzy hair for healthy and shiny locks!

What cures dry frizzy hair?

The number one way to get rid of dry frizzy hair is through nourishing it back to life. “Remember that you want to add vitamins and minerals back into your hair cuticles, this will help manage frizz and prevent breakage,” Campos says.

She adds that choosing the right products to hydrate your hair is one of the most important ways to tame frizz and give it that shine back. Luckily, we did all the guesswork for you with our list of anti-frizz products that are perfect for taming unruly summer (or all year round) hair!

How do you get rid of frizzy hair naturally?

If you’d rather go the natural route to reduce frizz, Campos recommends using jojoba oil. “Jojoba oil is known to be a natural leave-in for brittle and dry hair,” she says. “It has many benefits — and my favorite part is that it is all natural.”

Campos suggests using Baja Basics Organic Jojoba Oil (Buy on Amazon, $12.95), which is rich in vitamins C and E to get rid of dry hair. For maximum results, the experts at Baja Basics suggest applying a few drops of oil to hair, focusing on the dry ends after washing and conditioning to avoid split ends and breakage.

You’d be surprised to know there’s another great frizz control product in your pantry right now: apple cider vinegar (ACV)! ACV is perfect because of its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that stimulate hair follicles to reverse hair loss and frizz.

Try making a ACV hair rinse by mixing three to five tablespoons of the vinegar with one cup of water (add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to help with the smell). Pour it on to your hair and scalp as you’re showering and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water and let your hair dry before styling.

It’s definitely worth keeping these two natural ingredients in your beauty kit to fight frizz whenever you’re having a bad hair day (don’t worry, it happens to all of us!).

How do I get rid of frizz in five minutes?

We all have days where we need to quickly do our hair and head out the door. However, frizzy hair can cause us to spend more time in the mirror than we want. Luckily, hair colorist Johnny Bueno and hair stylist CocoAlexander of Cojohaus Beauty and Starring by Ted Gibson are here to save the day by sharing their three step technique that will hide frizz in under five minutes:

  1. Brush your hair to thoroughly untangle.
  2. Add a moisture gloss — they prefer using David Mallett Serum (Buy at TheWebster.com, $80) — or a product with a little more strength for thicker hair like Kevin Murphy Easy Rider Anti Frizz Flexible Hold Cream (Buy on Amazon, $29.70).
  3. Apply the product mid-length through the ends of your hair and slick back into a smooth ponytail for an easy, everyday look!

How to Get Rid of Frizz Hair for Different Hair Textures

Whether your hair is straight, curly, wavy, or thick, there’s one thing you need for frizz control: moisture. “All hair textures are in need of moisture when hair is dry,” Campos says. “Find the right products that work with your hair texture and you will be golden.”

The good news is our experts told us their favorite products to use for each hair type for the best results!

For straight hair: Campos suggests using Virtue Healing Oil (Buy on Amazon, $42). “It’s a great additive to hair that feels unruly. It adds shine and softness and its reparative proteins give a glossy feeling changing it from the inside out,” she adds.

For curly hair: She loves using Kevin Murphy Killer Curls Cream (Buy on Amazon, $37.19). “This lightweight product can change your life. It is easy to comb through and it does not become sticky or stiff.  It will do many things at once and will bring back your flawless curls.”

For wavy hair: Bueno and CocoAlexander recommend using David Mallett Hydrating Mask (Buy at Revolve.com, $75), which doesn’t weigh hair down. Plus, it’ll emphasize the hair’s natural waves while taming frizz!

They also suggest applying the L’Huile de Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo Oil Treatment (Buy on Amazon, $59). Similar to the hydrating mask, they note that it won’t weigh your hair down and gives it a nice shiny finish by locking down the hair’s cuticle.

For highly textured or very thick hair: The duo also points out that the pre-shampoo oil treatment works wonders for highly textured or very thick hair, using twice a week while the hair is dry.

How to Get Rid of Frizzy Hair After a Shower

After taking a shower, the steam and humidity can cause our hair to frizz even before we get a chance to properly style it (ugh!). Thankfully, hair artist Vanessa Weiss has a foolproof method that keeps frizz under control after you’ve stepped out of the shower:

  1. Dry your hair with a towel or hair dryer as much as you can so it’s no longer soaking wet.
  2. Apply a few squirts of any anti-frizz product and gently work it in the strands.
  3. Braid your hair in loose two-strand braids or twists. Try not to make them too tight so that your hair can finish drying.
  4. Allow your hair to air dry until it doesn’t feel damp anymore.
  5. Take the braids or twists out of your hair and continue styling your hair as you wish.

How do I stop my hair from frizzing?

Now that you know how to get rid of frizz, the haircare experts at John Freida offer several tips for stopping it altogether. One common mistake is brushing your hair too much, which causes breakage. Instead, only brush the strands when they’re tangled and feel free to apply a small amount of an anti-frizz hair product so that it’s not totally dry as you’re brushing.

Excess amounts of heat from a flat iron or the shower can remove some of the hair’s natural oils. So turning down the temperature dial a few notches can ensure your hair retains its moisture to give you a glossy finish.

Also, try wrapping your hair with a microfiber towel after washing it to lock in its oil and avoid dryness. And don’t forget to give your tips a regular trim to avoid brittle, split ends that might cause frizz. A few haircare tweaks can go a long way for nixing frizz before it starts.

Thanks to these easy tricks, your hair will be sleek, shiny, and most importantly, frizz-free. If you’re looking for more must-have hair products to try at home, check out our lists for the best keratin shampoos, essential oils to regrow thinning hair, shampoos for gray hair!
