Tina Fey may have fame, success, and a razor-sharp wit, but when it comes time to rest her head on her pillow at night, the 49-year-old comedian admits that, much like the rest of us, she sometimes needs a little bit of help drifting off to dreamland with a supplemental aide ($20.99, Amazon).

In a discussion with Oprah Winfrey for the media mogul’s 2020 Visionary Tour last month, the Saturday Night Live alum revealed the types of things that keep her up at night. “My friends and I are all very stressed by the news and the daily events,” she said.

Her secret for overcoming all the noise? “I eat well, I move around, I try to sleep, now that I spent so many years sleep-deprived — sleep deprivation is no joke, there’s a reason they use it as torture,” she joked. “I love going to sleep — it’s my favorite part of the day. I drink some Natural Calm magnesium and I go to sleep.”

Billed as the “anti-stress drink,” this vegan powder supplement’s super power comes from the 325 milligrams of magnesium in each and every serving — an amount that’s well within the recommended 310 to 420 daily milligrams for adult females.

Magnesium plays a huge role in our everyday functioning (it’s responsible for roughly 600 different enzymatic reactions in the body), with sleep being no exception. The problem? Many of us aren’t getting enough of it, particularly in the case of menopausal women.

That’s bad news for those who love sleep, like Fey, since magnesium deficiency can lead to irestless sleep, which can prevent you from getting the deep, restorative slumber your body needs to perform, or worse, insomnia.

The low gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitter levels that occur as a result of magnesium deficiency also make it hard to relax, leading to heightened stress and anxiety.

By adding Natural Vitality’s magnesium-filled Calm powder to her routine via a nighttime beverage (tea, anyone?) the 30 Rock star is essentially increasing GABAs in her brain that not only promote sleep, but encourage relaxation — particularly since drinking it may enhance absorption, according to the brand.

You can also mix this supplement into your juice or smoothie during the day to help with everything from increased energy (magnesium helps your body to produce and store it) to an increased immune system to bone support.

Reviewers certainly seem to agree: Natural Vitality Calm has nearly 3,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, with one shopper writing, “If you have anxiety issues, please research magnesium deficiency. Taking one recommended dose of this during stressful times helps me calm down within 15 [minutes], and a regular dose helps me sleep at night. For me, it’s almost a ‘miracle cure.'”

Added another: “My chiropractor recommended it based on the fact that most of us have a deficiency in magnesium to begin with and because I was having issues sleeping. I take about 1.5 teaspoons of this in a half of a cup of water EVERY NIGHT before bed and I have been sleeping like a baby ever since. This stuff is amazing.”

Reduced anxiety, better sleep at night, and more energy during the day? We’ll definitely drink to that!
