Deceptively Simple ‘Brother and Sister’ Riddle Baffles the Internet

If you love brain teasers and puzzles as much as us, you’ll be delighted to know that there’s yet another viral riddle making the rounds on the internet now. The brain game involves figuring out how many people are in one family, and while some folks are a little confused by the question, others simply find it hilarious.

The riddle, which has been floating around under the radar for quite some time, asks: “A mom and dad have four daughters, and each daughter has a brother. How many people are in the family?” We’ll give you a minute to think it through — but make sure you read it again very carefully before you answer!

The reason why this riddle is all over the web right now has a lot to do with a funny viral story about parents telling this same riddle to one very unsuspecting daughter. As The Daily Mail reported, a mom and dad confused their daughter bigtime during a seven-minute video clip, in which they jokingly asked her to solve it and explain her thought process.

Her answer, which she repeatedly gave with frustration, was 10. And unfortunately for her — or anyone else who might have guessed the same number — that response is totally wrong. We can definitely see how someone might think that, especially because at first glance, the riddle may seem to suggest that there are four brothers and four sisters.

But as an algebra website explains, the answer is actually seven — including the mom, the dad, the four sisters, and the one (!) brother. Because each daughter in the riddle only has one brother, that means they must share that same brother — making him the sole male sibling in the whole pack.

Give yourself a pat on the back if you got it right the first time!
