Meet Don Gummer, the Man Who’s Had Meryl Streep’s Heart for Over 40 Years

How much do you know about Don Gummer, actress Meryl Streep’s husband?

Although well known as Meryl’s husband and despite keeping a relatively low profile, Gummer is well accomplished in his own right, working as a sculptor. Gummer was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on December 12, 1946. He is currently 74-years-old.

Gummer’s early work was mainly table-top and wall-mounted sculpture but he eventually turned his focus to large free-standing works in the 1980s.

His first solo show was in 1973 but since then, his work has been featured at many shows across the country. His work has also been exhibited in group shows.

How did Meryl Streep and Don Gummer meet?

Gummer’s first wife was Peggy Lucas. They married in the early seventies but divorced not long after. Meryl and Gummer met in 1978 when he lent her his apartment shortly after the sad death of her then-partner, actor John Cazale from lung cancer. Just six months later, Gummer went on to marry Meryl on September 30, 1978 in the garden of her parents’ home.

The couple has four children together: Henry Wolfe, a musician, Louisa, and Mamie and Grace, who are both actresses.

Gummer has been a huge supporter of Meryl’s incredible career, accompanying her on many red carpets at such events such as the Academy Awards and the Oscars.

In her 2012 Academy Awards speech where she won Best Actress for Julie & Julia, Meryl began her monologue with a shoutout to Don: “First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me.”
