Legendary Actress Doris Day Dies at 97

Doris Day, the iconic actress whose wholesome voice captivated Hollywood, has died after contracting a serious case of pneumonia. She was 97.

In a statement, the Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed the sad news that she died on May 13, 2019 at her home in Carmel Valley, California:

Doris Day passed away early this morning at her Carmel Valley home, having celebrated her 97th birthday on April 3 of this year. Nearly 300 fans gathered in Carmel last month to celebrate Day’s birthday. Day had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death. She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed.

Born Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff in 1922, the Cincinnati-native began her career as a singer at the age of 15. Her most famous tunes include “Sentimental Journey” and “Que Sera Sera.” She moved on to star in 39 films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much and That Touch of Mink, during her three decades of work in Hollywood. Doris, who was beloved for her warm and chaste persona, later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

Since the 1970s, Doris had focused much of her energy on the Doris Day Animal Foundation, determined to fight animal testing and to advocate for spay-and-neuter education and outreach. According to her eponymous foundation, Doris did not want a funeral, memorial service, or grave marker. Those wishing to remember her after her passing are encouraged to visit www.dorisdayanimalfoundation.org.

We’re keeping Doris Day’s loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
